Jack's Story
I was in the class of '64. My memory of those high school years is spotty. I was not a club member, not in the band, and not a sports' team member. The only name I can remember is a friend Oliver O'Bryan. During my senior year, a small group of friends & I did a lot of things together. For example, there were several of us in one car, and we drove to Houston to go ice skating. I was not a fan of pep rallies, and at the time I called myself an Atheist. I lived with my mom, who was a carhop.
After high school I worked for a year at Texas Bus Lines, and then I joined the Army in 1965. I spent some time stationed in San Antonio, until I volunteered for service in Germany. I met and married a German girl. My time with the Army was even extended for 3 months, so that the Army could pay for the birth of my son in Heidelberg, Germany.
After the Army, I used the GI Bill to attend college at Southwest Texas State University(renamed to Texas State University). I graduated with a BA degree in 1974, with a certificate in secondary education. I taught high school English for 18 yea...Expand for more
rs. Quite ironic that someone who did not really care for school, and someone who joked around and caused minor disruptions, would end up with a job in education. Maybe I was due for a taste of my own medicine. My last teaching assignment was at Aldine High School in Houston, until my resignation in 1995.
I remarried in 1992. My second wife transferred to Salt Lake City from Houston, when her Houston office for Delta Air Lines closed, and I joined her in '95 in Salt Lake. I worked in customer service for UPS until I took a disability retirement(MS) in 2000. My wife and I joined the Methodist church several years ago. In 2003 I started working as a volunteer at an office for doctors specializing in the neck & spinal cord. Also a bit ironic that I have MS, and am working with doctors specializing in the spinal cord area.
Since my wife retired from Delta Air Lines, and currently works part-time for Marriott Hotels, we have been fortunate with traveling(though standby) and hotel stays. We have been fortunate in the places and sights we have seen, and hope to visit many more.
