Jack's Story
Like a lot of guys at the time, I ended up in Viet Nam for a year, from '68-'69, and then finished out my brief military career in Japan. Worked for the Times-Register for a while, and eventually ended up in radio for about ten years. Got married the first time in 1980, resulting in the oldest boy, Richard, who got his degree in graphic design at LaSalle Univeristy in Bogota, Colombia (not to be confused with the mail order joint) in '05. He's still in Bogota, and does 3D animation, film restoration, plays lead guitar in a death metal band, and is now working on opening his own brewery.
Got married again in '94. William is 19 and living in Las Vegas (as of Feb '14). Elizabeth came with number two and just finishing up her degree in elementary education at UNLV. The wife is gone, the daughter stayed. I've been single again since '97, and remain available, should I ever find anyone foolish enough to be interested.
I have two novels out. "With Honour in Battle" is a u-boat story set at the end of the World War II. "Bacalao" is set aboard an American fleet sub in the Pacific from 1941-44, and was "launched" with a book signing downtown at the Cod in the summer of 2004. Both continue to sell, and a lot of old submariners seem particularly taken with "Bacal...Expand for more
ao." I also served as editor in the publication of a number of World War II submarine war patrol reports, but with most of those available online now that project has essentially ended. I also do some free lance book editing, and have edited recent editions of Robert Southey's "Life of Horatio, Lord Nelson," and Bligh's "A Voyage to the South Sea." My article, "Torpedo Room Fire," was published in the August 2011 issue of Naval History magazine.
Bought a house in Cumming, Georgia in '08, but have now moved back to Ohio (Dublin), courtesy of Verizon Wireless. I keep hoping the market will recover enough to sell the house and buy one here. Had a full length straight play, "Coming Out," produced at the Abbey Theater here in Dublin, and also appeared in it. There may be a movie made from the play, and there will almost certainly be a novel. If you happen to be connected with a community theater, the play has been published and rights are available. Some other recent stage appearances include the Narrator in Into the Woods, Inspector Ruffing in Ravenscroft, Judge Taylor in To Kill a Mockingbird, and Mr. Witherspoon in Arsenic and Old Lace. Member of the Military Writers Society of America and the Dramatists' Guild of America, along with the American Legion.
