Jack's Story

Life I did a six year stint in the Navy (1990-1996), which I totally loved and totally hated. I loved it because I got to see the world - I was stationed in Naples Italy and I took advantage of many opportunities to visit other countries in Europe and parts of the middle east. I hated it because of the political correctness and social engineering that was introduced under Clinton's socialist joke of an administration. I met my wife while I was home on leave in February of '92. Not to sound corny, but it was love at first sight. We were married in Italy (quite an adventure, let me tell you) and we rode out the rest of my enlistment there in Naples. I could have reenlisted, but as the old cliche' goes, there's no place like home. So I opted to get out and try life as a civilian. I wasn't sure what exactly I was going to do for a living, but I knew I'd find something. After being back in the states for about 6 days, I got a job offer from WorldCom (now Verizon Business) in January of '96. I accepted the offer and that's who still signs my paycheck. I now live in Bartlesville (north of Tulsa) and I'm still with Verizon Business. I've managed to avoid the layoff axe over a dozen times now (knock on wood). Today, I'm a manager in Verizon's broadband and ethernet circuit provisioning department. Call me toll free here at work, if you want, 877-457-6660. I'm here from 8 am to 5 or 6 pm just about every weekday and I'm in the phonebook as well. I visit my family in Van Buren from time to time and I try to keep in touch with my hig...Expand for more
h school buddies. Other than work and family, I enjoy hunting, fishing and I play a round of golf every once in a great while. In 2005, I finally got off my butt and resumed working on my bachelor's degree. I've been going to Oklahoma Wesleyan University since Sept 2005. It's now July 2008 and I have just over 3 months left before I get the BSBA parchment in hand. It has indeed been a long road. I can't believe my son will be in the 10th grade this coming school year (MAN how time flies by)! I have seriously contemplated finding another profession. Telecom is very high stress and the environment here has been less than appealing for longer than I care to remember. On the bright side though, things do appear to be turning the corner for us. Organization changes and process refinements have made things a bit more bearable the past few months, but I still feel like I could be doing more fulfilling work. I probably could ride it out here the next 15 or 20 years until I can somewhat retire (unless I die of a heart attack or stroke first) and then go for something "better", but what would I be missing out on if I were to do that? How many opportunities for something great would I let pass me by? Oh well...back to the story. I renewed my relationship with Jesus Christ in 2006. I was missing out on a lot while I was doing my own thing. I am so grateful that I came back to Him! I'm nowhere near perfect, so I stumble and fall at times, but I try to do better "the next time". He has never let me down! More to come....Take care!
