Jack's Story

After CHS, all I really wanted to do was surf. To avoid getting drafted, I went to St. Pete JC. Eventually my draft lottery # came up 266 so I was draft exempt. Shortly thereafter, I dropped out of college and opened a surf shop in Clearwater. In 1971 I moved to the East Coast and opened another surf shop. I began painting on surfboards and discovered I was into art. A few years later I sold my surf shop and in 1974 I went to Paris to study painting and art history. After I returned home, I attended FSU and received an MFA in Art. In 1978 I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my artwork. In L.A. I established my career as an artist and also got a job as a professor. I've been making art and teaching ever since. I ...Expand for more
finally got married in 2000. In 2001 I was hired to establish the art dept. at the newest campus in the California State University system. I am currently an artist, Art Dept. Chair and tenured Professor of Art. Throughout it all I have never stopped surfing and I hit the surf 3-5 days a week. I live at the beach north of Malibu with my wife Andrea and our two cats. Andrea is a English professor and surfs too. She says she wants a kid now so I may be doing that soon. We'll see what happens.
