Jack's Story
After high school I joined the Navy and became a Hospital Corpsman. The training then was equal to that of an LPN in the civilian world. Additional training in trauma and field first aide would today qualify as an EMT-P.
Spent time at the Naval Hospital, Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, a year as a Combat Medic with the Marines in Vietnam and fished my active duty at the former Navy Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pa.
I received a B.A. in Speech and Theater(today it's called Communication Arts) from Heidelberg College (As of January 1, 2009 Heidelberg University).
I worked for the old St. Joseph Hospital for 19 years before the merger took place and all the old timers were laid off.
I sold advertising for the Morning Journal for a couple years, before deciding to go into the Education Field.
Took advantage of the Bachelors Plus Program at Ashland University.
I became a stay at home Dad while taking courses at LCCC and Ashland. In 2000 I received my teaching license.
I began subbing for the Amherst School system specializing in classes with computers. It seem...Expand for more
ed that many of the older subs didn't like computers, so I would be called. Several long term sub positions allowed me to get to know many people in the system.
In 2002 I was recruited to take a full time Media Aide position at the new Amherst Junior High. I apparently did a good job setting up the junior high Library/Media Center as the position was re-posted for a Media Specialist. I applied for and got the job with the provision that I return to school and work on a Masters in Library and Information Science.
I had already been to several workshops at Kent State and had gotten to know the profs at the library school. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time and won a full ride to Kent. I graduated in 2006 with a Masters in Library and Information Science. Since then I have been the Media Specialist/Teacher/Librarian for Steele High School in Amherst.
I love my job and working with young people keeps me young as well.
I have been married for 21 years and have five children: 2 step sons, 2 sons of my own and an adopted daughter from Poland.
