Jacqueline's Story

Life story, hmmmm.... Went to college the year after high school, and spent more time on extra-curricular activities than on school. It wasn't a bad school, really, just too conservative and I wanted a lot more adventure. Got married and went to Japan, where my Air Force husband was stationed. We spent about a year there, and I finally started having some satisfying adventures. We came back to Orange County, where we both found jobs and wondered what to do next - O.C. was still too conservative, and I still wanted more adventure. We moved to southern Oregon, bought a cut-over piece of timberland, where we had fantasies of farming. You can tell we were very naive suburban kids. We both went to school to get LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) certification. I wound up working in the Intensive Care and Coronary Care units, which was satisfying as far as it went, but not quite it. I started taking classes at the local college in Ashland, Oregon, where I eventually wound up getting my B.S. in Biology. Got divorced, and started spending a lot of time in the woods chasing endangered plant species for various federal agencies. This was *a lot* more like it. Went off to graduate school, majoring in Botany and Geography. Worked on some research projects, but ran out of money and emotional steam at abo...Expand for more
ut the same time, so I never did get my master's. Instead, went to work for the Oregon Legislature, adminstering Legislative Committees in the areas of agriculture, land use, and water policy. Moved over to agency land, where I continued to work in land use and water policy, and did a fair amount of whitewater rafting, which was definitely adventurous! Budget cuts forced me out of state government, and after a couple of years, I started working for a small non-profit public policy research institute. It was interesting and satisfying, but there was way too much indoors and not nearly enough outdoors. After a few years, I took a deep breath, sold my house, and headed to the Columbia Gorge to live on an intentional community. That didn't work out, but I did meet the man who is now my partner. About 18 months ago, I came back down to SoCal to help take care of my failing mother. I lived with her for a while, until we had to put her into a home. I am now living at my partner's house above Tehachapi. He has land in the Columbia Gorge, which we work in the summer to develop into a permaculture homestead - we will live there full-time once we get a legal house built. And even though I've finally had plenty of adventures, there's still time for plenty more! Yes, I still read everything in sight.
