Jacqueline's Story

After graduating from Williams High School, I attended Valparaiso University (Valpo) in Valparaiso, IN (approximately 50 miles west of Chicago) and graduated with a BS degree in Business Administration in 1978. I looked for a job in the Chicago area to be near to my boyfriend, Keith Forsyth, from Pittsburgh, PA who also attended Valpo. He had graduated two years earlier with a BS in Biology and Medical Technology. I found a job within a week at Mutual Trust Life Insurance Company in Oakbrook, IL as an Actuarial Calculator. On the drive from Burlington to Chicago with my belongings, we became engaged (in Frankfort, KY - where we stopped for the night). I married Keith back in Burlington in September 1979. We lived in the Chicago area (Woodridge, IL) for 1 1/2 years. When Keith's employer, Bio-Science Laboratories, decided to move into Chicago from the suburbs, Keith decided he would rather head south towards warmer weather than have to drive or move into Chicago. We had just lived through the worst winter Chicago had seen in 40 years and we were sick of below zero temperatures and tons of snow! Keith found a new position at ECU in Greenville, NC, in the Infectious Diseases department working for an MD. I worked for Allen-White, a small company that owned and operated motels (Holiday Inns) and fast-food restaurants (Hardees in FL). When I was laid-off two years later due to the company's financial instability, Keith once again decided to look for a job elsewhere. As he had heard that Houston had a huge Medical Center, he applied for a number of positions at Houston-area hospitals and arranged for a trip to Houston for the interviews. We drove down and within a week, Keith had found a job at Texas Children's Hospital as a Medical ...Expand for more
Technologist in the Pathology department in the renowned Texas Medical Center. I also applied at the jointly owned/administered St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital/Texas Children's Hospital. We drove back to Greenville to arrange our move to Houston (1982). When we returned to Houston, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital wanted to interview me for a position in their Patient Refund department. The guy I interviewed with had been ready to hire someone else when he saw my resume and hired me instead! I worked in the Patient Refund department for 1 3/4 years and then transferred to the Financial Accounting & Reporting department, which was much better suited to my degree. And I've been working there ever since! Keith worked on a small, dedicated team to convert the Pathology lab from a manual data entry system to a computerized system several years later. It was then he realized he preferred computers to lab work and quit to go back to school to get a degree in computers. He got an associate's degree in Computer Science from San Jacinto University, a local community college and immediately applied for an internship at the Harris County District Attorney's Office in the ITS department in downtown Houston. His new boss wanted to make it a permanent position, so Keith was immediately hired as a full-time employee. He has been working there ever since 1997. We moved from Houston to Pearland, a suburb 25 miles southeast of downtown Houston and 22 miles from the Texas Medical Center in 1984. At that time, Pearland was a sleepy, little, somewhat rural town with a population offonly 15,000 people. Now it has grown to over 110,000 residents, due mainly because of the completion of TX Highway 288 that gave direct access to the Texas Medical Center.
