Jacqueline's Story

Jacqueline is from Chickasha, Oklahoma. Jacqueline's schools include Chickasha High School, immediately followed by attendance at the University of Oklahoma where she received a BBA (Business Administration/Accounting) in May 1977. While at OU, Jacquie was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta social fraternity (where she made many lifelong friends) and was on the Dean's Honor Roll and, for some semesters, the President's Honor Roll. Upon graduation from OU, Jacquie began working for the international accounting firm then known as Peat Marwick Mitchell (now KPMG). She worked in Peat Marwick's OKC office from 1977 to 1984, progressing to Senior Audit Manager. In 1984, she was asked to transfer to Peat Marwick's Amarillo office to take over management responsibilities for one of the firm's largest and most important U.S. clients, a large investor-owned electric utility. She remained at Peat Marwick for 16 years until 1993, loving every minute of what was an exciting and rewarding career, preparing her well for the second phase of her career. While working in both OKC and Amarillo, many of Jacquie's Peat Marwick colleagues became life-long friends. Of particular note, she was a group of five professional women who began taking an annual "girl trip" beginning in 1982. At the time all five young women lived in OKC but none have lived in OKC for years and now live from Tampa to San Francisco and various places in between. They have been through divorces, remarriages, children, job changes and relocations over the past 30 years and a great source of feminist support over the years. All are professional women, some are published; they are a very interesting group who have traveled together to London, Bermuda, NYC, Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco, Tampa, Colorado Springs, New Orleans, Kansas City, Banff (Canada) and a variety of other locations. Those girlfriend trips are one of the highlights of every year for Jacquie. In 1985, Jacquie, the day before going on a ski trip with the girlfriends noted above, went to an optometrist hoping to get contacts before leaving for Tahoe. At that optometrist appointment, Jacquie met her future (and only) husband, William R. (Rob) Chafin, who happened to be the optometrist who checked her eyes. They began dating in September of 1985, married in November of 1986, and five years later, finally decided to try to have one child (preferably a daughter). In November 1992, right on schedule, Jacquie gave birth to a beautiful baby daughter who has been and continues to be the light of their lives. Jacqueline (Jacy) Humphrey Chafin was born on Friday, November 13, 1992. She attended a private Episcopal school through 8th grade and a very large public high school where she graduated in 2011 4th in her class of approximately 500. She received an academic scholarship to OU where in her third year, she is classified as a senior and is a Russian major in the OU Honors College with a 4.0 GPA throughout her college career. Movies Jacqueline likes include To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sound of Music, Annie Hall, all Woody Allen movies, all Katherine Hepburn movies, most Alfred Hitchcock movies, many classic movies, romantic comedies, Chick flicks, a...Expand for more
ny movies written by Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men, The American President), virtually all Oscar-nominated films since the late 1930's and any movie with Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, George Clooney, Diane Keating, Richard Gere, Meg Ryan, or Tom Hanks. Also, "Before Sunrise", "Before Sunset", and "Before Midnight." TV shows Jacqueline likes include HBO's "Newsroom" (Aaron Sorkin), Mad Men, Jerry Seinfeld, Law & Order, and The Andy Griffith Show (yes, still think it is a great show). Favorite musicians include oldies--songs from 70's and 80's; favorite performers include James Taylor, Carole King, Barbra Streisand, Simon & Garfunkel (all of whom I have seen in concert in recent years), The Boss, Rod Stewart, the Beatles, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, and the Rolling Stones. One of Jacqueline's favorite quotes is:"My own!! "Men come and men go, but girlfriends are girlfriends the rest of your life." Keep those girlfriend relationships!!! Another favorite--I don't remember who said it but I saw it in Glamour magazine about 30 years ago: "women have to be twice as smart and work twice as hard as men to get half as far; fortunately, that's not difficult."". Biography since high school: I graduated from OU in 1977, passed the CPA exam later that year, accepted a job offer at the (then) Big Eight accounting firm, Peat Marwick, in its OKC office where I worked until 1984, when I was asked to transfer to the Amarillo office to be in charge of that office's largest client, a large investor-owned electric utility. I remained at what is now KPMG until 1993. My experience in the electric utility industry served me well as I became a financial consultant in that industry and worked for clients all over the U.S. In 2009, I accepted the position of Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer for Golden Spread Electric Cooperative, a large generation & transmission electric company that provides power to 16 rural electric distribution coops in OK, KS, NM, CO, and TX. I love my work for this very progressive fast-growing company. I work with a great executive management team and because I work for a company that sells power to rural electric coops which means that, ultimately, I am working for the electric consumer at the end of the line, many of whom are rural and in small towns. many are large irrigators. I feel like I have returned to my rural roots, helping out those ultimate consumers by providing reliable, low-cost electricity. I have had a very fulfilling career--also very hectic as I work many hours (always have), solve very complex problems, travel frequently throughout U.S., and work with a group of exceptionally bright people, all of whom excel in their areas of specialty, primarily engineering, law, and economics. I met my husband, Wm R. Chafin (Rob) in 1985 (met while getting my eyes examined--he is an optometrist) and we married in November 1986. Initially, we planned to have no children but in 1991 changed our minds and decided to have one child. In November 1992, our daughter, Jacqueline (Jacy) Humphrey Chafin was born. She has been the light of our lives. She is exceptionally gifted-- a bright, compassionate young woman who is classified as a senior at OU.
