James's Story

February 2023 Update:: Well here we are in 2023. I retired in 2016. I worked 16 plus years after retirement from NYS DOT which describe below. In 2006 I started a second carrier as a transportation planner in Elmira planning and funding new highway and bus transportation projects. I loved my job. I had lots of interaction with old friends from DOT and folks who became new friends in Chemung County and the Regional DOT. I am most fond of remembering the bike and pedestrian and trail projects I helped guide to completion. and those I planed and funded for others to complete. I am now active as a Lion and as a Dog Park member.. Molly (our dog) and I walk with two other men every day for a few miles. I go to sporting events in the East and we both travel some each year. Our kids are working and single: son in Philadelphia and daughter in the Schenectady area.. Itook a new job in May, 2006 in Elmira, New York. I love my new job. After a transition 6 months we bought a new home in the middle of October, 2006. It is 5 miles north of Ithaca, New York with a view of Cayuga Lake from about 100 feet away. Karen and I love the place. I feel at home because I get to commute 38 miles to work again, like I did for 30 years from Sprakers to Albany, New York. We are painting rooms and moving stuff and I feel in some respects like I am a young man again doing what 30 year olds do. Well, I guess I am trying to ignore that I turned 61 two days after Thanksgiving. Our new address is: 1377A Taughannoc...Expand for more
k Blvd. Ithaca, NY 14850 Dave, our son, is a Senior at Syracuse University. He is doing well and hopes to be a journalist. He is in a serious relationship. We are happy for him and proud of him. Joanne, our daughter, got her Master’s degree in Education from St. Rose in January. She started teaching this past fall – fourth grade. It has been tough for her to start.. She is in a serious relationship, with someone I think I might even approve of this time. We are similarly happy for her and proud. Ancient history: I worked nearly 30 years at New York State Department of Transportation, after the first five years out of college working at LaSalle School for Boys – both in Albany. I worked as a bureaucrat in various programs, most notably in mass transit (bus and rail system) financial and operational oversight and grant programs. I enjoyed most of my years working for the State. Karen and I married in August 1976. We have two children as you can tell from the above. Joanne, our daughter, is our gift from Korea. David, our son, came along after we thought there was no chance of biological children in 1986. I was 39 when he was born. I was somewhat active in town politics and very active for 10 years in a group called CAMP which defeated an attempt by a regional solid waste authority to put a new landfill about ½ war of our home in Sprakers. We still have our old home in Sprakers, which we are fixing up some in order to sell it in 2008 (hopefully). Take care Jim
