James's Story
Life
I have retired from the US Army as a LT Col. I flew Helicopters in the Vietnam War. I recently retired from Fedex. My Son and Daughter are now married and I am a Grandfather of four girls and one boy. I still have video copies of the Senior Class Movie. Life is good now that I have two retirements. I have converted the Senior Class Movie to DVD Now. I have restored my first car, a 1967 Red Camaro RS, to its original state when I first bought it new just as I was graduating from College. My wife and I work at several charities in Sacramento through our Church and I am active in Veterans Organizations such as Veterans of Foreign Wars and Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association. We also now travel yearlly to our new Condo in Hawaii and stay for a week on the Western shore of Oahu. We wish everyone Peace and Good Health in the coming years and hope to see you at various Reunions.
School
The one thing I can say was that I attended a lot of different schools in California as my Dad got promoted working for the State Division of Oil and Gas. I began my Elementary School education in Santa Maria and by the third grade we moved to Downey, CA and I attended Rio Hondo School. The one thing I remember at this school was that one of my classmates was on Art Linkletter's House Party.
We moved to Taft, CA by the time I was ready for Seventh Grade and I attended Lincoln Jr High School. I played the String Bass in Orchestra and in the Eighth Grade I received the Patty Knox award for highest grade point average among Eighth Grade Boys. I was also elected President of Boys League that year.
The next year (1959) I went to Taft High School and had the priviledge of being in Bailey Newlee's Freshman English class. He was rough on me, but I learned a lot of valuable lessons for the future like the punctuation rules(1w) and that I needed to quit using a pencil and write with a pen. I also had Mr Field for Geography and learned how to draw maps. But my best subjects were Algebra and French. In my Junior year I was just starting to get used to Chemistry and was about to have Bailey Newlee for Junior English when my Dad got transferred to Woodland, Ca
Now I had to put off Chemistry for my Senior Year and took drama instead at Woodland High School. I also had US History, English and advanced Math from Leonard Thather. In my Senior year I had the most fun taking English from Mr Young, Trig from Mr Thather, and drama from Mr Sugars. I remember trying out for the play "Our Town" and get a bit part.
However, the thing that made the year complete was playing different roles in the Senior Class Movie shot by Gary Dodson.

ted would be more valuable in the future at our class reunions.
If I had to do it all over again, I would be more social and date more than I did which was none. I would go to more dances and the Proms. But at least I focused on my studies and got a B Average which allowed me to enroll in UC Davis.
Years later after many years at UC Davis and in the US Army, I ran into Gary Dodson at the Dennys Restaurant in Rancho Cordova and was surprised that he still had the Senior Class Movie and tape at his office. I had thought someone had made a copy of it, but he said no one had ever done it. So I borrowed the film and tape and took the film to Hollywood and had new copies made. I made a copy of the tape at home as I had my own tape recording equipment. Since that time back in the 70's I have transferred the film and tape sound to video so that they are now one and can easily be shown at Reunions.
My only regret was that I was never able to show it to Gary before He passed on.
College
I attended the University of California at Davis from 1963 to May of 1968. I majored in History and Political Science after learning how difficult College Math was in my Freshman year. I graduated from UC Davis in September of 1967 with a degree in History and a commission as a Second Lt in the US Army. I spent my four years at Davis in Bixby Hall, Room 318, and was a Kiwi to the end. I worked with John Herr on the 1966 UC Davis Yearbook. In my Graduate year I moved off Campus and completed my work as a Student Teacher at Sam Brannon Jr High School in South Sacramento. In Army ROTC I also took Flight Training at the UC Davis Airport and gained my private pilots license in the summer of 1967. It took me three tries to finally get my license. I enjoyed biking around UC Davis to classes and around campus. By my Senior year bike traffic was really bad and they started to block off streets to help the situation. UC Davis also brought in London Buses and started running them around Davis to help the student traffic situation.
I really remember finals week and how I studied for weeks to get ready for finals. What a relief when it was all over. I remember the Cal Aggie Honor Spirit and how there were no monitors during Mid-terms or Finals. Even the one time my bike was taken, someone had borrowed it to go to the Classroom Building.
I also remember I was in my Subject A Class writing a paper on the November day back in 1963 when President Kennedy was assinated. That was the year I injured my foot helping to build the freshman bonfire for Homcoming. I remember going down to the Davis train station to meet the train in our pajamas and the people on the train were pulling down their shades when the saw the big mob of students at the station to meet them.
