James's Story
Thanks to Bonnie (zigler) Plowman and her helpers for getting the once in a lifetime reunion going. These are never
to be forgotten moments. I had a great time, sorry I had to leave a day early due to plane connections. I hope to come back
soon and ride around town with Gail Einerson or anyone else and look where people I knew lived and hear their stories.
Vanderhoof High School Memories
My Dad bought 200 acres of land on the East side of Vanderhoof that contained one barn (which we lived in
the summer of 1957, while we built our house) and one sandy beach on the NE side of the property.
Everyone was afraid we would not let people go to the beach, but we built a cattle guard and everyone
was welcome to continue visiting the beach.
I started school in the 11th grade and found you had to actually study to make a passing grade. I was
used to alway having the same classes the same time everyday in the states, the staggered classes sent
me for a loop. I had a hard time adjusting and some times ended up in the wrong room at the wrong time.
We played basketball pretty much the year around, some people from Fort St. James played badminton
and were very good at the game. I think of Cliff Russel, George Davis and Bruce Foresight(sp).
Also we had a couple of Track meets each year. Our Basketball schedule was only about six games.
We had two games at Burns Lake, Two at Prince George and Two at Vanderhoof. Today, I understand the
basketball schedule is over 100 games per season. I remember staying overnight at Prince George
for a two game weekend. Also I remember having to get off the bus and all of the boys pushing the
Bus up a steep hill. On the way to Burns Lake, one of the buses broke down and all the boys and
girls had to get on the same bus. It was fun having the girls sit on our laps. Mr. Matson was
our coach while I was in the 11th grade and in the 12th grade, we got a new coach and he knew
very little about basketball, so the 10th, 11th and 12th boys coached the senior team and I am not sure
who coached the Senior girls teams. George Davis Coached the 7th, 8th and 9th grade boys team
and I coached the 7th, 8th and 9th grade girls team. I know that George Davis came up with our mascot
name and I can remember us voting on Vikings, later the girls name was changed to Vike Queens.
I bought a pair of basketball shoes(Called running shoes) from the French's department Store. These shoes

asted me through high school, four years of Navy wear and I had them until 1971. Who can remember
Ken Warren's severe ankle injury while playing basketball in the 12th grade? I would like to
thank John Froese for keeping me out or trouble, when I would say, "lets do something", John
would say, "lets not and say we did" John and I went to the same church and hung around together.
I remember David Thomson(sp) delivering groceries for A&M Market in that cute little van.
Principal Diemert would sometime take a few of us boys to Prince George to watch the Vanderhoof
Bears play, then out to dinner and a couple of games of bowling. Who can forget the hay ride
through the streets of Vanderhoof on a horse drawn sleigh. Also there was a dance at our
gym(rec center) and some of us jacked up David Hiatt's car's rear tires, so the rear wheels were barely
off of the ground. He came out to dirve the car and the tires just spun. He couldn't figure out how
the car tires were spinning on dry pavement.
I remember the great Teachers, they would come in to work almost ever night after school and
prepare for the following day. Seems to me most of the teachers were single, except Mr. Klassen
and Mr. Carvell. Mr. Williams taught English, Mr. Carvell taught Science, Mr. Diemert taught
Candian history, Mr. Klassen taught woodworking, and I had typing from one of the two single
ladies that drove Nash Ramblers.
Some Classmates I wonder what happen to: Windy Morris(I think she went to Jasper, Alberta) and Georgia Williams,
to the Vancouver area? Just like any school, students came and left, but left footprints on our hearts.
I dearly loved to watch the Vanderhoof Bears, and cheered with all of the Vanderhoof people.
The first line of Dave Wall, Don Finnie and Jerry Silvers was just super. I could never
figure how they could do all that pushing and shoving and not get a hair out of place. I remember
Ken Clay, Roy and Ross Strigler, Gordie Steel, Corney Froese, Abe Wall, Ken Silver and some
I can't remember. Also in March of 1959, begging for cold weather so the playoff home games with
Prince George could held in Vanderhoof. The cold weather never came.
I have visited Vanderhoof many times over the years and kept up with the news through various
people, including my parents, Anita Dreamil(sp) while in the Navy, and Gail Einarson for
many years. I would like to thank all of you for the enrichment you added to my life.
