James's Story
Life
I graduated in Jan.1961.I was to have graduated with the June 1961 class. In highschool my interest was music and beatnick poetry. My best friend in highschool was Leo Goding the bass player. My favorite teachers were Mrs. Marks, Mr.Marberry and Mr.Winberg(sp?). I grew up at 604 Pacific ave. After highschool I went to the Grove Street Campus of Oakland City College.After there I went to Cal-State Hayward and got a B.A. in psycholgy (1967) and masters in educational psychology(1969) and moved to Michigan in 1969 to teach psychology at Oakland Community College which is located in Farminton Hills Mi. I picked up a Ph.D in Educational Psychology from the Univ of Michigan. It is hard to believe I have had the same job for over 30 years but teaching is never boring as the students keep changing. In the fall of 2002 I became the Dean of Academic and Student Services at the college.In the fall of 2003 , I returned faculty and over see the colleges Learning and Tutoring Center. Fall 2005 , I was appionted Dean of Academic and Student Services at the Orchard Ridege campus of OCC. I am assuming that this will be my last job at the college. I still play the piano as a hobby(jazz, pop, DOOWOP,), read beatnick poetry at coffe houses out here, and have been a basketball coach for the college. I have two grown sons, two exwifes, 2 grandchildren and cannot believe how time flys.
College
The community college in
Oakland was my academic gateway into higher education. My acadmeic grades at Encinal and my
performance on the ACT led my counselor to tell me I had very little academic promise. At the time I attended Cal- State Hayward,after Grove Street Oakland City College, CSCH was a new schooland the teaching was great and I earned a B. A. and M.S. there before moving to Michighan. I found my background from Cal-State Hayward really helped me in my PhD at Univ of Michighan. In fact while the degree from U of M helped opened doors, the education in California was superior.
