James's Story

I stayed true to my goal of becoming an accountant and am still practicing at a regional firm in Poughkeepsie, NY. After 2 years at JCC I barely survived the 3rd year at University at Buffalo, but graduated the next year and took a job with Price Waterhouse in Rochester. The Army was after me as soon as I graduated, but I bought a year at work by enlisting in the Air Force. The Air Force years were good years for me, even though the times were really bad. I went back to music, playing in a Drum & Bugle Corps at my training base in Denver, then auditioning for, and getting into, the band at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX. I met my wife, Kay, in a chow hall there, where she was in training as a medic. We were married later that year and had a son the following year. I was taking trumpet and music classes at a local university, but an "early out" squelched plans to change careers. I went back to work with PW in Rochester and was offered a transfer to New Orleans in '81. After 2 years there, we were convinced (by the trouble we had with schools, primarily) that we belonged back east, so I took a job with a firm in Bridgeport, CT. One more job change brought me to NYC to work with a much smaller firm, where I thrived. I commuted into NY to that firm for 17 years, first from Trumbull, CT, then from Fishkill, where we moved after becoming "empty-nesters". I moved my practice to the current firm in Poughkeepsie in 2005, trading my 2-hour door-to-door commute for a 20-minute drive. Our son, Randy, and his wife have 3 children, the youngest born in August, 2013. They are a blessing and bring us great joy. Ran...Expand for more
dy is an artist, currently employed as a design dept. head at a diploma and award frame manufacturing company in CT. He graduated from RISD and worked for 13 years at Bic in Connecticut, lastly as brand manager for their lighter line. Randy was 13 when his planned week-long bicycle trip with 3 of his friends got me hooked on bicycle road trips. Despite initial protests that they didn't want adults involved, they relented and let me tag along on an abbreviated 3-day trip, complete with tents, camp stove, etc. I have been taking week-long trips ever since, including 11 times on RAGBRAI and 5 or 6 loaded solo trips back to Trumbull and Fishkill from Rochester. Last year a friend and I did the first Cycle Greater Yellowstone and this year we will be in Oregon in August for the Oregon Bike Ride. I really love riding and hope to stay on two wheels as long as I can. Music is still a big part of my life. NYC is easy to get to by train and we go in often for NY Phil. concerts and jazz at the many great venues there. I have played very little since leaving the Air Force band, but took a lesson last fall and hope to get back into playing this summer. Time is scarce during tax season, but I am determined to set aside time for a complete change in embouchure so I can enjoy playing at church and with different wind bands in the community. I have been really bad at keeping in touch with those who contributed so much to my life at JHS and the other schools I attended in Jamestown. I look forward to reconnecting with as many of those that can make it to the reunion this year and keeping in touch with them and others afterwards.
