James Bowdish:

CLASS OF 1962
Bernardsville, NJ

James's Story

I missed my high school graduation while traveling in Europe with the United States of America High School Band which my Bernards High band members honored me by voting for me to participate. I served as a lifeguard at the Bernardsville community swimming pool for several summer's after graduation and helped coach the swimming team which included a very talented swimmer and Bernards High cheerleader named Meryl Streep. I rattended Wake Forest College in 1962, graduating in 1966 after which I married my college sweetheart Jenny in August 1966. I then attended Stetson University College of Law graduating in 1969. I served thereafter in the US Army as a Captain in the JAG Corps at Ft. Hood, Texas from 1969-1973 during the height off the Vietnam War. While there I was assigned as Chief military defense counsel for a soldier accused in the My Lai Massacre which occurred in Vietnam in 1968. When I was initially as...Expand for more
signed to the case, the My Lai event was big national news. I was asked by the Ft. Hood information officer to give an interview about the case in November of 1969 which appeared on the national news program NBC' s Huntley/Brinkley Report that evening. My client was acquitted in a court-martial trial by a panel of Army combat veteran officers in 1970. Jenny and I returned to Florida after my discharge from the Army in 1973 where I still practice law. in the same Stuart, Florida law firm I joined after the Army. Jenny and I still live in in a community near Stuart, and we are very fortunate to have our two children Mike and Shelley Bowdish, both of whom were born at Ft. Hood, iving nearby. I count my blessings every day for my life experiences, my happy family and my great times and remembrances of Bernards High school and growing up with all of you in Bernardsville, NJ.. Hope to hear from all of you soon. Jim..
