James's Story
Life
I graduated from Tarrant in 1955. I joined the Air Force in 1956 and remained until 1960. I was stationed in Shreveport, La. except for the period of my basic training and school in Alexandria, Va. Upon completing my military obligation I started working in the offset printing business which I learned while in the Air Force. I married Virginia Wright in 1962. Virginia graduated from Phillips High School. We had a daughter Allison in 1964. From 1960 until 1971 I worked at Birmingham Publishing Co., Minerva Lithography and Alabama Engraving Co. In 1969 I started to UAB in the Engineering school studying for a degree. I worked while going to school at night. In 1971, I joined Southern Services, Inc. as a drafter. I received my Electrical Engineering degree in 1973. Our son Jason was born in 1976. Allison has four children and owns her own company where she trains Board of Directors for non-profit organizations. She was chosen as one of the out-standing young women of America and selected to carry the olympic torch when the olympics were held in Atlanta. Jason received his Chemical Engineering degree from Alabama, his math degree from UAB and his Masters in Mechanical Engineering from UAB. He went to work for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa doing work for the defense department. He is 29 and single. I retired from...Expand for more
Southern Services in 2001 after 30 years. I was a Project Engineer for the last 20 years. Virginia and I live in Eagle Point. She retired from Westinghouse in 1996 as a Nuclear Sales Representative. She worked for Westinghouse for 31 years. About 5 years before retiring, we started buying and selling antiques. We were very active in this from 1995 until 2003. We still maintain a small booth but we have down sized greatly. We both were tired of being retired so we started working in the Real Estate business where I am the assistant to an agent and Virginia works in the office. We work about 2 minutes from home and can go home for lunch. We go to Iowa 2 or 3 times a year to see Jason.
Update 4/27/15 I am working as the office manager at RE/MAX Classic Realty on Hwy 280. Our son Jason went to work at IBM a couple of years ago and after one year, their division was sold out to Lanova. He and Cassie have a girl named Alexis (Lexie) who is almost 2 years old. They live in Cary, N.C. Our daughter Allison was just named the CEO of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. Her youngest, Ross, will attend the University of Alabama this fall.
Can't believe I will be 79 this fall. Tried retiring but really enjoy working and meeting people. Virginia and I are heading for N.C. this Friday to see our grand-daughter. She will be 2.
