James's Story

When I turned 14, I got my Social Security Card and went to work. I worked all through High School so I did not participate in a lot of activities. After graduating I worked the summer with my brother in law leveling land on various Reservation Land along the Rio Grand Valley. On my 18th birthday, I enlisted for 4 years in the Marine Corps. In the third year I met my wife Jean and upon my discharge, we were married. We settled in Sacramento and I worked in the surveying field for over 15 years with a private engineering firm and PG&E, a major utility. During that time I went to night school and received my BS in Real Estate and Land Use. I interviewed for a job as Land Supervisor for Shasta Division and got the job. At that time PG&E had 13 Operating Divisions..Shasta Division covered four counties Trinity, Shasta, Lassen and Tehama. That office had the responsibility for rights of way acquisition and Land Management of 65 thousand acres of water shed and operating lands. Beyond husband and father, It wa...Expand for more
s the the most rewarding job I've ever had. In 1987 there was a reorganization and much to the chagrin of the land Supervisors, a new organization was created and there were 6 Region Land Departments. I was selected to oversee Mission Trail Region Land Department. It covered the south bay, San Francisco, to Santa Barbara. After 6 years, they, Management, came to the conclusion, just like we told them, "It isn't working. They dumped us. I went to work for the County of Santa Clara in the Assessors Office handling Tax Appeals. I received 10 years of credited service and we left the Bay Area. At that time we had plans drawn to build an ARC's home. That's a concrete in form construction. We tried to get a builder to construct our home in the foothills of El Dorado Co. and finally gave up and moved to Sacramento to a gated Seniors subdivision. My granddaughter called it The OLD PEOPLE'S PLACE. On Easter Sunday of this year, while holding her hand, my wife took her last breath and I lost 55years of my life.
