James's Story

I was born in Goodland and left in 1967, after my freshman year. Many may remember me through my fathers business, BURDS OK RUBBER WELDERS (tire store), across from Central Grade School on Main St. In Goodland I was active in football & wrestling, rode a motorcycle and drove a jeep. Moved to Yuma, Colorado 68-69, where my Dad was in partnership in Yuma Motors, the GM & Harley-Davidson dealership. Craig, Colorado 69-70, Sreamboat Springs, Colorado 70-71. Mike Miller, a friend from Yuma lived with us and finished high school in Steamboat. Quit high school end of first semister senior year, 1971, to travel Europe for 6 months. Returned to Steamboat Springs and opened up the Husky Oil service station, next to Mazzolas Itilian Restaurant, with my Dad. In 1972, married a wonderful gal from Denver named Patti and we decided to live at Hahns Peak. We braved 450 inches of annual snow fall and -50 cold in a cabin with no running water or electricity. We stayed there for 4 wonderful years, loving the layed back life. 1972, Patti and I decided to throw a 4th of July party at our cabin in Hahns Peak. About 40 fiends showed up and stayed for 5-7 days, and this annual event continued to grow and lasted thru 1978 with up to 150-200 friends gathering for a week or more. These were great parties filled with live music, B-B-Q's, beer packed in snow gathered from Mount Farlwell, east of Hahns Peak, and hauled down to the cabin. June 1976 started selling real estate in Steamboat and was a Private Investigator in western Colorado for Reliable Investigations. 1978, after ...Expand for more
a divorce from Patti, I bought a new Harley Low Rider, the first factory custom, and traveled through out the west coast and Canada for 2 years. 1980, moved to Grand Junction, Colorado and got back into the real estate business as a residential builder-developer, and specializing in commercial investments. As a hobby I became involved with a friend in mining precious metals. I'm still semi-active in this today. When the market tanked in the mid 80's I moved to Phoenix, Az. and took a job with ASA, as senior vice president in charge of 3 manufacturing divisions and 5 retail locations, employing as many as 125 people. By 1990 I was tired of the traffic and August weather in Phoenix and moved to Cedaredge, Colorado, where my folks had lived since they left Steamboat in 1973. I returned to building and development for a while and during that time I bought some equipment and contracted to plant trees for a friend in Aspen and Telluride. 1994 I married Frances, my current and last wife, She is a wonderful and caring person who totally enjoys motorcycling and camping. She is a western Colorado lady, born and raised around Durango, Colorado. Finally got my "adopted family", complete with 7 kids with spouses, 20 grandkids, 2 great grandkids, as I never took the time to have children of my own. 2004, I decided that I needed something that was not as physically demanding, so I took a position with the #3 flooring company in the U.S. as a local rep. for Western Coloado. I still do this today along with some personal consulting for a couple of private companies.
