James's Story

James was born in Los Angeles, California. Jim's schools include Mark Keppel High School. He graduated from Occidental College in 1966. After Occidental, he was awarded a Marshall Scholarship and spent two years studying at the University of Sussex in England, earning an M.A. He returned to Stanford, where he completed a Ph.D. in Political Science, including a two-year period on a Foreign Area Fellowship to do his dissertation research in England. He then accepted a position in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine, where he is now a Research Professor. ciate Dean of the School of Social Sciences, and Department Chair. His research received awards from the American Political Science Association and the American Society for Public Administration. He also received the two top teaching awards at UC Irvine and UCI's highest honor, its Extraordinarius Award in 2009. His book Understanding the Political World is now in its 13th edition. He has been listed in Who's Who in America since 1988. He has traveled in more than 70 countries, and served five times as a professor on Semester at Sea. In 1971 he married Lesley, an Englishwoman he met at Sussex University. They parented a son who now works in San Francisco and a daughter who also works in the Bay Area.
