James's Story

After high school, I went to WSU and earned undergraduate degrees in Business Administration and Agricultural Economics, I managed an apple orchard in the Columbia Basin for a while, was employed as a banker for six years, earned my MBA, owned my own financial company, worked as a computer support specialist then as a process improvement analyst for 16 years at Boeing.. After I retired, I went back to earn another graduate degree in adult education, went to China to study their education system and taught ESL/ELL, Just got back from Bali and Cambodia where I taught ELL. My wife and I just got back from Italy. I am a Disaster Relief worker; nationally and internationally. I also speak 6 different languages (although fluent in only English). My current hobbies include traveling (I have been to 30 different countries) working on computers and maintaining my property. I used to volunteer with the Lynnwood Food Bank and the Red Cross. Now (my wife also) volunteer with the Concern For Neighbors Food Bank (where I was on the Board of Directors). I drive for them on a substitute basis. Our son is in L.A. making electric sports cars and our daughter works as an Athletic Trainer/Office Manager. I always wanted to be an educated person who could think when I grew up. My family and friends thought that i was a mediocre person (and they were right) who had some interesting ideas. I always wanted to be a financially independent person when I grew up. My family and friends thought both of these ideas were dreams. As it turns out, they were wrong. I got 4 degrees to help me handle my financial, academic and professional goals. In 2011, I was in...Expand for more
5 different countries (USA, Canada, Australia, Grenada and Haiti) as well as 20 states. I now get to say that I have been in all the states and every province (and 2 Territories) in Canada as well as on five different continents. Haven't been to Antartica or Africa yet. Don't know that I will go to either of them. In 2017 I drove to Yellowknife, NWT, and Banack, Montana. I also rode one of my motorcycles to Palouse Falls. My wife and I just flew to LA (to visit our son), rented a car and drove to Albequerque (sp) N.M. and then flew home. Enjoyed Carslbad Caverns again and well as Meteor Crater. I relax mostly by riding my motorcycle. I especially like to ride alone and to new places. For example, in 2011, I rode to Fairbanks (I have been to Alaska 3 different times), Yellowstone NP, Reno, Central Calif. and all around Washington. In 2019 I rode to Lake Louise. Sometimes my wife even goes with me. In 2021 I drove to Hells Canyon, Crater lake and Crescent City. My wife and I just got back from Italy and Costa Rica. Plan on following the Pony Express Trail/Morman Trail/Lewis and Clark trail/California Trail/Oregon Trail soon (pandemic permitting). Now that I am getting older, I need to start slowing down. We will see how that works out. So far in 2022, I have driven the McGruder Corridor and drove to Molson, the Oregon coast and Neah Bay. In 2023, I plan on driving to Haidi Gwaii, to Harts Pass and to Pomeroy (where the have a horse drawn plow demonstration during the first FULL weekend of April). Drove to Alvord Desert in SE Oregon. Returned home via Lolo Pass and Mcgruder Corridor. Would go to each of them again. Jim Doran
