James's Story
Hello Everyone,
I am currently retired in The Villages, FL. Living the good life after a lot of years in the business world. My wife, Susan, who is the light of my life, and I lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains on a small mountain lake in the Hickory Nut Gorge for thirteen years.
Susan and I were married in 1984 and share four children, and eight grandchildren in a blended family. The kids are scattered from Berea, Ohio; Roanoke, Virginia; Clover, South Carolina; and Sanford, Florida.
We play Pickleball, golf, travel, read.. We are both instrument rated pilots and owned a small airplane (C-182) for both adventure and utliity. Several years ago, we flew her to Central America for a couple of weeks. We finally sold her in the spring of 2017. It was like cutting your arm off.
In the summer of 2014, I flew the 182 to Alaska with my friend Rob Craig. What an adventure -65 hours round trip through Whitehorse and Dawson. Rob did the Dead Toe shot in Dawson - a generous shot of whiskey with a dead, frost bitten toe in it. I was too old and not enough years left to tell the story to make it worthwhile.
Our traveling since retirerment has been so much fun. . We have seen China, Jordan, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Russia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Argentina, Argentina, Greece, and the British Islands. We have a trip around the world scheduled in January 2018.
After selling Foresight Technology Group, I stayed active in business by serving on the Board of Directors of two employee owned companies. I spent 9 years on the Boards at Carver Machine Works in Washington NC and Lewis Tree Service in Rochester NY which was a great honor. I helped start the Hickory Nut Gorge Foundation, a small endowment for the community, which is one of my proudest achievements. I also do some investment management stuff and started Tatanka (real estate development in Lake Lure.) I started and ran a couple of Aaron's stores in Elkin and Boone, NC. We sold those in 2013 and still own the buildings and lease them to Aarons.
In February 2011, we spent an entire month in Boquete, Panama. Rented a house and just hung in the mountains....Expand for more
Boquete is rated one of the top 5 world wide places to retire. It is 65 to 80 degrees year round, with only a dry and wet season. We are fortunately visiting during the dry season. There is an interesting meteorlogical thing called a Bajareque. It is a very fine mist that blows alot due to the mountains and the elevation. It is both refreshing and creates lots of rainbows. Its not easy to get here. First to Panama City, then to David, then a car drive up 45 minutes toward Volcan Baru. If you get a chance to go, it is fabulous.
I stay in contact with life long friends Ron Jackson and John Johnson from DHS 63. Both Ron and John are true blessings in my life. (but don't tell them - it would go to their heads). Also keep in contact with Tim Starner, DHS 66, one of the great personalities.
I met Ron Jackson in Kindergarten at McKinley School. We met most summer days behind DHS to play sports. We both went to Upton Avenue Methodist Church. My father died my freshman year. Ron's father died his sophomore year. We were the double play combination on the BB team our senior year. He was the best man in my wedding. I was the best man in his. We have been friends for over 65 years. He is one of my great blessings in life. I also maintain contact with old DHS 'rs Tim Starner, John Johnson, Lyle McClow, Bill Siegel, and Wade Upton.
My childhood dream was to be the shortstop for the NY Yankeess. Only one thing really stopped me............................. talent. I did achieve some level of fame at DHS in baseball. When I replaced Terrry Harmon as the starting shortshop in 1963, it is certain the quality of shortstopping never fell as much in a single year.
I think most people who knew me from DHS years would be somewhat surprised that I have been moderately successful. I believe that I spent the first half of my life lowering people's expectations and then the last half overachieving against those lowered expectations. With a lot of missteps and mishaps, it has been one hell of a ride.
The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is old friend Joe Links from Waite High School. He was a mentor and a friend.
Hope you are all enjoying the ride as much as I am.
Best wishes
Jim
