James's Story
Following graduation in 1964, I attended Dickinson College for one year. Not achieving a sufficient grade point average, I was not invited back for another.
In the fall of 1965, primarily in an attempt to avoid the draft,I entered Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana. However, my draft board had its eyes on me, and thus, I ultimately decided to enter the Marine Corp's officer training program.
In January 1969, I graduated from Franklin, with a B.A., and was, at the same time, commissioned in the Marine Corps. I was stationed at Pensacola, Florida for flight training, earning Naval Aviator wings in May of 1970.
Jacksonville, N.C. was my next assignment, where I transitioned into the CH-46 helicopter and then received orders to Southeast Asia.
Returning in March of 1972, I was assigned again to Pensacola as a flight instructor.
September 1973 saw my departure from the Corps and entry into law school at the International School of Law in Washington, D.C., which is now George Mason University School of Law, located in Fairfax, Virginia.
(At the time, I was married, had two children and...Expand for more
worked full time as a law clerk in a firm in Washington.) Graduation with a J. D. degree occurred in January of 1977 and I passed the Virginia Bar Examination the following June.
Our third child was born the following January)
In 1982 I cofounded my current firm of Eisenhower, Laufer & Tarby, P.C.and since have practiced law in Fairfax, Virginia, focusing on taxation, estate planning and administration and business transactions.
After law school, I got back to playing clarinet and saxophone with a 19 piece dance band, and continued with that group until recently. I have also had the opportunity to play in local theatre orchestras and church groups.
My first marriage dissolved after 32 years. Two years later I met and married my current wife who is a German citizen and added three daughters. She introduced me to European travel, which we both enjoy.
I try to stay active in music including playing sax and clarinet in a local "dance band."
My children are spread from Arkansas to New York and Alaska, I am a grandfather of five and have taken up the "old man's" game of golf.
