James's Story

Teachers who inspired: Kevin Masterson, Ernie Monteith, Mr. Gillies, and a teacher from Kingsville who taught English. Cannot remember his name. Maybe Furgal? Sure I would do it all over again. Enjoyed playing hockey for Essex Junior Bombers, and the rivalry with Cottam especially. Although we never won the ECCL championship, playing well and being a leader on that team, was an important part of building my self-esteem, and I am grateful to Uncle Cliff Cox who made it possible by sponsoring the team, and giving the league the energy it needed to survive those early years. Gaye Queen was part of that team and a good friend who, sadly, died at a much too early age. I am still skating regularly and vigorously at age 77. Workplace During summers I worked for the Ontario Hydro, painting towers near Windsor, a job which paid well ($2.25 an hour in the late 50's/early 60's!) although had some inherent risks in working high in the air. I shared this experience with Gary Gurbin and Paul Steeles. When I left Essex High to go to Western U in London, I took Zoology 20 from professor Ken Bourns, whose speciality was parasites. Eventually I did graduate work with him, including an M. Sc. and a Ph.D., working on a small blood fluke which lives in the circulatory system of ducks. It was challenging and growth-inducing, including writing theses and publishing papers, and included some histology and electron microscopy. Ken became a trusted friend as well as a mentor, from whom I learned a lot. Unfortunately, He died in 1998. I was privileged to speak at his funeral in London. In the meantime I met Sheila McClure, who was studying zoology at Western as well. We were married in 1966. She had been a lab tech working on the kidney transplant team at Victoria Hospital, and then taught school at Bishop Townsend PS for two years. During those early years we shopped around for a church and ended up at The Salvation Army where we were welcomed, embraced, and given a meaningful role in the congregation. This association proved to be pivotal since, in 1971, having felt called to full time ministry, we left our teaching and research careers and entered the SA's seminary in Toronto. We were ordained in 1973. We have had an intriguing and rewarding career. After serving as pastors of congregations in Alberta and Ontario for nine years, as well as a year in alcoholic rehab work in BC, we transitioned into Hospital Chaplaincy in 1983 - where we served until 2006. In 1985 we were privileged to establish the Spiritual Care Dept at a brand new hospital, Scarborough Grace, where I also taught Clinical Pastoral Education, as an adjunct faculty member of the Pastoral Dept of the Toronto School of Theology. This involved certification as a Teaching Supervisor with what is now the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care, a ten year process which included an M.Div. from U of T, a lot of personal growth, and theological development. Teaching spiritual care skills to ordinands from various faith groups and gender identities, was a great challenge and privilege. Some of my students remain friends and in some cases, colleagues. Today my theological mentors include a lot of lived experience, some U of T profs and CPE Educators (e.g. Ovey Mohammed and Colin MacKinnon) and scholars like John Spong, Marcus Borg, Dominic Crossan, Henri No...Expand for more
uwen, Bruce Sanguin, Brian Swimme, Matthew Fox, Richard Rohr, and Tom Harpur. I am an unrepentant liberal among my colleagues and have taken stands in favor of freedom of choice for women seeking abortion, gay marriage, environmental/climate change issues, and multi-faith dynamics. I was recently (2018) a significant participant in the process of our congregation becoming an Affirming United Church congregation. Sheila and I have been happily married since 1966. We have two grown children, Debbie (b. 1972) and David, (b. 1974 in the back seat of our car in BC). We became grandparents for the second time (12 Dec 2006), and we are retired and now living in Oshawa. Granddaughters Chelsea and Hayley (children of our son, David) have been an integral part of our lives since their births, and they are almost teenagers now. They are developing into amazing, compassionate, dynamic young women who also care deeply about the environment, nature, and the earth's future. Our daughter, Debbie, while not having children of her own, is step-mom to her partner’s son and daughter, who have become beloved grandchildren to us as well. For the first time in our lives we own our own home and enjoy working in the garden and taking care of our property. I have also developed a significant interest in nature photography and contribute regularly to our church's social media and communications efforts. After retiring from the Salvation Army in 2006, I worked part time as a chaplain at the Uxbridge Hospital (part of Markham Stouffville Hospital) until March 2017. We spent part of every summer in Parry Sound for many decades, and more recently near Bancroft, where we also pursue the other passion in our lives, the Monarch Butterfly. Since 1997 we have been part of a program organized through the University of Kansas on the internet. We raise some from eggs to adults every summer. We also tag and release them in the fall, before they begin their migration to Mexico. We spend 100's of hours along the shores of Lake Ontario, nets in hand, capturing, tagging and releasing these amazing creatures. We have had close to 130 butterflies, tagged either in Scarborough, Oshawa, or in Parry Sound, recovered in Mexico, as well as one in Kentucky and several in Ontario - exciting! In February 2004 we went to Mexico and spent several awesome hours among the Monarchs in the mountains west of Mexico City. I also contribute to a study of an external protozoan parasite (Ophryocystis elektroscirrha) being conducted annually by the U of Georgia. We do presentations and live-releases every September in schools, churches, and senior’s residences. Since retirement we have found a spiritual home at Faith United Church in Courtice. The progressive theology, informed and challenging preaching by Rev Larry Doyle, and warm spirituality fits us better, but we continue to have a lot of respect for our friends in the Salvation Army and the good work they do. It has been a wonderful journey so far . . . and we look forward to continued growth and fulfillment in the remaining years, with the hope that our lives have made a difference and we will leave the world a better place . . . hard to believe we are at this stage! God be with you each one, who may take the time to read this! If you want to connect, look for me on Facebook. Sincerely, Jim Ellis

We shared the very difficult but necessary experience of saying goodbye to our (Golden Retriever) grand dog (Debbie and Rob’s dog) Skye, on Tuesday. She was a rescue dog from Turkey. She was full of cancer. She loved us and
