James's Story

I joined the USAF in Jan 1970, worked in the Audio Visual Career Field as an Illustrator, Graphic Artist, Audio Visual Superintendent, and my War Skill was Combat Camera. I retired in Feb of 1996 while stationed at the JOINT INTELIGENCE CENTER, Pearl Harbor HI, and remained in HI until Jan 2007. I married Elizabeth "Beth" Nelson in June 1970 when she graduated from TP. We had three children together (Beverly, born in 1970, lives in Jacksonville FL. Michael, born in 1972, lives in Hawthorne CA, is divorced and has one son, Michael who lives in Watts CA. Duane, born in 1974, lives in Jacksonville FL, is married to Melinda, has three children, Jasmine lives in Kaneohe Hawaii, Kari is in the US Army and lives on Schofield Barracks HI, and Christopher who lives in Jacksonville with his Mom and Dad. Beth (Elizabeth Ingrid Nelson, was a classmate, she was in the 1970 Class, at Terry Parker) and I were divorced in 1995. Beth passed in 2023, Jacksonville Beach FL. MILITERY SERVICE: My first duty station for the USAF was at Scott AFB, Illinois, and my first assignment there was to illustrate a safety manual for the 7th Weather Wing. My second assignment was at HQ Pacific Air Forces Hickam AFB Hawaii where I was in HQ Graphics, I was able to get assigned to a one man graphics shop with the 6594th Test Group, also on Hickam AFB, and I got my first opportunity to work with members of the AF Special Operations Para Rescue. I reenlisted in Hawaii, and was transferred to Eglin AFB Florida, I was assigned to the Tactical Air Command Audio Visual office there. From Eglin I was reassigned to HQ Tactical Air Command Graphics, Langley AFB Virginia. After Langley I was reassigned to the audio visual office at COMMANDER IN CHIEF PACIFIC COMMAND, Camp Smith Hawaii (a Marine base, and also the home of the SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND. From CINCPAC, I was reassigned to the Los Angeles AFS (later AFB, and now a Space Command Base) HQ Graphics. I was at the HQ Graphics for only a few months before I was given the assignment of contract manager for the base graphics and base model shop. It was at Los Angeles AFB that I was sent to an MSF Instructor course. After 8 years, I was reassigned to the Joint Intelligence Center Hawaii Audio Visual Section ...Expand for more
as the Audio Visual Superintendent, and I continued to teach MSF Courses on Hickam and Pearl Harbor, and taught part time for the University of Hawaii as an MSF instructor as well. After retirement I continued to teach for the UH until I retired from that position. I lived with Wendy in Hawaii, from 1996 until 2006, her daughter Erika, lives in San Diego where she graduated from the University of San Diego. MY MOTORCYCLE SAFETY HISTORY: I originally taught for the USAF at Long Beach Naval Station and for the site at Los Angeles AFB, the site I established, but I started working part time after time, and I worked for the Motorcycle Training Center, a private MSF company (the largest MSF school in the USA at the time), and the California Motorcyclist Safety Program, a contract operated by the CHP, part time from 1985 until 1992 as a motorcycle safety instructor/trainer. I was the first California Motorcyclist Safety Program Instructor of the Year in 1990, I had taught 10,000 students that year. While teaching in California, I had the opportunity to teach many movie stars, and work with the casts for movies like CHOPPER CHICKS IN ZOMBIE TOWN. I had speaking parts in CMSP movies like FOCUS and MSF movies like HOW TO TEACH THE ERC, the Experienced Rider Course. The copies of CALIFORNA FOCUS and a CHANNEL 13 NEWS episode I was in, can be seen in an album on Alice Franklin's FB page, titled motorcycle safety. She also has a TV show with Jackie Zieman, a former student of mine, hosting a segment on women motorcyclist. There are several Alice Franklins on FB, my Alice's profile photo is of her sitting on my lap, she is a little thing (Leprechaun), so she had to sit on me to reach the camera. I taught at the University of Hawaii full time from 1995 until 2007 when I retired. I taught at sites on Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, and Oahu. I moved back to Jacksonville in 2007 to spend time with my father who had prostrate cancer. When I first moved back to Jacksonville, I worked as an MSF Rider Coach, teaching for A&M Motorcycle Safety, and FSU North Campus here in Jacksonville. I work as a field supervisor for Centurion Protective Services now. I married Alice O'Steen on December 29, 2013, and we recently purchased property in Yulee Florida.
