James's Story
Attended School of Visual Arts and New School for Social Research. Drafted 1968. Refused deployment to Vietnam. Trained and assigned as military legal clerk in Germany. After discharge, worked with Jane Fonda and Joan Baez in Washington DC using military law to do in-service education against Vietnam War. Moved to NYC, became documentary filmmaker for WNET and PBS and independently. Focus on progressive social-issue media. Was Board Chair of distribution company in Manhattan. in Hamburg, Germany for two years after that working on home restoration, and in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. Now dividing time between Ireland and Brooklyn. Completed two-year course in secular Buddhism in Devon, in the UK, with focus on mindfulness and compassion. Trekked through high Himalayas in Nepal with U.S. medical team. Have beautiful daughter, Kate, now 35 (!). My partner, Caitlín, lives in Derry, northern Ireland. Would consider myself an atheist, Marxist, secular Buddhist, and liberation theologian. Works for me.
