JJ's Story

Interesting almost forty years. I have two wonderful very adult children. Oldest is Alex at 32 with his new partner, Lauren and their brood of four children living in Mesa, AZ. Danielle at 30 with her partner, Jazzique and their two girls who live on the island of Nevis in the West Indies, or the Caribbean for those that are geographically challenged. With respect to relationships, I'm wrapping up my third marriage after six years to a very lovely woman, Faith. Currently living in Asheville, North Carolina. My profession allows me to live where I choose, as long as I have access to a reliable internet connection ( I have resorted to satellite in the past) and an airport that doesn't force me to have too many connections. There was one exception to this - when I lived in the Caribbean for two years - but I endured it. I left Chicago in 2002 for Richmond, Virginia, doing much the same as I now do. Laura and I were recently divorced after being married for 19 years and having raised Alex and Danielle. Richmond sent me in a whole new life trajectory, meeting soon to be wife number two - Chic. A rodeo champion from the '70's and a holistic healer. A very beautiful and unique woman. I learned many lessons with that one. She and I eventually sold the house in the country with three horses, five dogs, two cats and god knows what else, and moved to a house I had in Gilbert, AZ. That was in 2006. I bought it for my Mom several years prior, but she had more fun living in Washington DC, so we decided to take advantage of its vacancy. I ended up flying to Philadelphia every week for six months consulting to a pharmaceutical company at which point we decided to go live on the island of Nevis. We previously visited the island many times, and actually got married there in 2005, so it felt like we were going home. Our intent was to open up a destination women's empowerment/retreat center, but things happened. I leased a second home up on the volcano where I had a great view of the Caribbean. My cat, Sekki and I would open the doors each morning, sit out on the balcony, drink our coffees and watch the monkeys come out of the trees to warmup and play. I never wore a watch or had a clock but still managed to function with my healthcare clients. Chic ended up leaving the island for Mexico where she currently resides. I eventually had to leave the island for Orlando, FL to fulfill a contract I had with a hospital there. By this time my daughter Danielle left San Diego to join me on the island. She came to visit Dad for a week during which I got her certified in SCUBA diving, which I did a lot of. Two months later she notifies me that she's quitting her job at the Gap, packing up her stuff and moving in with me. Hmm..ok. She did, very quickly got her diving instructor's license, and ran the one and only dive shop on the island. She still lives there being a wife, mother and children's clothing store owner. You can take the girl out of the Gap, but you can't take the Gap out of the girl. As I was preparing to move off the island, through mutual friends, I ended up meeting Faith who at the time was living in Eugene, Oregon. So I found myself shuttling between Nevis, Orlando and Eugene. Faith ended up leaving Eugene to move ...Expand for more
in with me in Orlando. Very soon thereafter we got married. Once the Orlando contract was up, it was - "so Hon, where do you want to live now?" We loved the ocean, but weren't really sure we wanted to do the island thing again, so we moved up to Wilmington, NC. Leased a beautiful historical home in downtown Wilmington. If you're a Bulls fan and you don't know who came from Wilmington,NC - shame on you. MJ as in Michael Jordan. Ok, more beach time and a different type of SCUBA diving. Diving in the Caribbean is like swimming in an aquarium. Diving in the Atlantic off the NC coast is going on safari. Literally. Wreck diving, night diving, and way out and way down finding ancient shark teeth called megalodons, each one being the size of my fist. Also found some great white teeth which look like baby teeth compared to the megalodon's. Swam with some very big companions. Imagine being 20 miles out in 100 feet of water on a night dive, turning off all lights as these 10' sand tigers swim by. Big puppy dogs until you touch one, which one of my diving partners decided he wanted to do. He'll never try it again. So, after a few years in Wilmington, I started missing winter, seasons, snow, etc., so I looked West. I went to visit Asheville a few times by myself, which is located in the mountains of western North Carolina, did some hiking and camping in the mountains, and proclaimed it the next spot. Faith and I quickly subleased the Wilmington house and found a beautiful home in Asheville to rent until we decided what to do next. Well, we decided to separate after three years here. I concluded that Asheville is where my taproot is going down, so I bought a nice, if a little too large for one house in happening West Asheville. Also leased an office in a historic building in downtown Asheville. I'm giving the healthcare industry one to two more years, increasingly more part-time as I start doing things for which I have more passion. Energy medicine, spiritual coaching, fitness, all under the umbrella of self-mastery. I just received my CrossFit Level One instructor permit, and will continue down this path integrating true mind, body, spirit technologies into a comprehensive self-mastery program. In a back-handed way, its to teach and help individual learn personal responsibility so they stay out of hospitals. They are very nasty places which one should avoid at all costs. I've spent too much time here and in other countries in healthcare facilities. Don't go there. I also want to do some writing that's been wanting to be expressed for a number of years. Finally, I have a business in Ireland for which I have some young 30 somethings working. I have an exclusive to a very innovative chemotherapy assay process which will start undergoing field trials this year. Again, another tool for taking control of one's health, and if one finds oneself facing cancer for the first time, more effective tools are becoming available. Perhaps over a drink at the reunion we can discuss the upside down incentive system we call our healthcare industry. Naw, why ruin a good time. That's it. That is my once per decade update. All is well. Not a single regret. Life and the process of life is absolutely perfect and so very full of love.
