James's Story
Life
My Spouse
On an end-of-Summer trip to South Padre Island (Sept 6, 1966) with John Wilbur, his van broke down in Harlingen. We didn't know anyone there, but belonged to DeMolay, a youth organization sponsored by the Masons. I know that Harlingen had a chapter and got the names of their officers from the Chamber of Commerce. I finally reached the sister of the junior councilor (the third number I called), and asked for help getting to a decent motel as we were stranded in a rather seedy part of town. She put her dad on the phone and he arranged to pick us up and insisted that we stay with them. Sandra and I have been married 40years, as of September 7, 2008.
My Kids
Andy was a National Merit Scholar at UT in math (go figure), got a MA in math from UTSA, and is now an editor for Steve Jackson Games in Austin. He will be 39 Christmas eve 2009.
Gretchen left home at 16 to attend the Texas Academy of Math and Science on the campus of the University of North Texas. She stayed in Denton to get her BBA in Strategic Management. After graduation she married, ...Expand for more
moved to Houston, started law school at the University of Houston, and divorced. She finished law school in Dec.2000, took the bar the end of February 2001 (she passed!), and remarried on March 3,2001. After leaving the her job as ADA for Denton County, Gretchen spent a short time as Assistant District Attorney for Caldwell County (Lockhart) and Ellis County (Waxahatchie). She is now a university lecturer (Assistant Professor) of Criminal Justice at UNT Dallas.
My Job
I retired from my job as a life insurance actuary for USAA Life in San Antonioin 2002. Upon retirement, I entered the brand new Ph.D. program in Finance at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I completed my Ph.D. in May 2006, and began a new job as Assistant Professor of Finance at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, in August of 2006.
In April of 2009 I resigned to take a job as Assistant Professor of Finance at Texas A&M San Antonio for the Fall 2009. I am home to stay! The years at SIUE were very rewarding, but I am not cut out for a commuter marriage (Sandra stayed in SA).
