I have been teaching English at Drew University in New Jersey for 25 years now. I am primarily a specialist in the European Middle Ages. I currently hold the NEH Chair of Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities. Academic life has let me live in London and Germany, and has taken me to Spain, Ireland, Honduras, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. with my family, I am happiest in front of a classroom.
I have been married to Cassandra Laity, a very prominent scholar of literary Modernism, since 1991. We will have been together for 30 years this October.
We have a 16-year-old son, Zachary, who is absolutely the best (and a very talented writer).
We live in Morristown, New Jersey, and have a small cottage on Lake Ontario, near Buffalo NY (and Toronto!).
My latest intellectual passion is disability theory and rights.
