James's Story

College I did a great deal of commuting the first year, and then I lived in Arlington until graduation. I enjoyed my time at UTA, but I wish I had finished my graduate work. Arlington was a good place to live, but I wanted to move away from the "college town atmosphere". From the time I left Arlington, I have lived in the northern part of Fort Worth. I live close enough to work, but far enough so that I don't see my students all the time! Of course, since I have worked for so many years, I see present/former students everywhere...from the top of a mountain in New Mexico to Disney World to Switzerland. It was unusual having a degree in French in the education field in Texas, but I have used it teaching middle school and high school students. I have also used my French when I took my students to Europe (France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, England, and Liechtenstein), and when I have the opportunity to travel to Europe without my students. Workplace I worked in the same district for the last 32 years. I have worked from the 4th grade level (it's all a blur) through 8th grade. I prefer the middle school students. I guess that's why I've been at this level for 20 years. I have taught all levels of math and English, but I really enjoy what I teach now (and the last several years): Honors Algebra and French. I feel that I know a little more than the students in these areas! Because of the wonderful salary of e...Expand for more
ducators, I have worked part-time in a few places: Sanger-Harris/Foley's as a night supervisor/manager, Fort Worth ISD as a GED educator and administrative assistant, Sylvan Learning Center, and in a tutorial program at my school. I have been very fortunate in my career, and I was proud to work in the Birdville ISD. After 32 years I did retire from the district. One of the last conversations I had with my father before he passed away was, “You need to take a break. You will be ok.”I was ok, but I didn’t feel anything that I was doing was meaningful or interesting or exciting. So, I was grateful that I found a middle school math position at The Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts. I was not ready for retirement, and I knew that. I stepped right into teaching 8th grade Algebra and 8th grade to 12th grade French. One of the best decisions I have ever made. As with any school, things don’t stay the same. Too many changes, I guess. I promised my students that I would be at their graduations from now until my final students graduate. I have always attended several of their performances…plays, musicals, dance performances. I will always miss my students, and will always be proud of what they will accomplish. .So, after teaching there for ten years, I did finally retire. I don’t know many educators who have stayed in the profession for 42 years. I will always be proud to say that I am/was/ always will be an educator.
