James's Story

Life I was the Undersheriff of Grant then Hidalgo County, then went on Active Duty with the National Guard after 911. That gave me service in all the wars from Viet Nam unitl now. I am about warred out!! I returned from Active Duty, Retired as SFC, US Army (I was a Chief Petty Officer (AWC) USN before going into the National Guard). Most recently I was in mining as Electrical Planner. I retired back to the Santa Rita/Mimbres area, and am ready to play with my two mining claims, old cars, and a million other projects. Yes, I am having a fantistic life. There seems like a million years between 1966 and now. Anyone wanting to catch up wants to call or write. My phone is C-(575) 313-7481 I am a 5th Generation Native New Mexican, Born in Reserve and raised on a ranch at Lake Valley. I worked in mining as an underground mucker in my teen year summers prior to entering the service. A veteran of the Vietnam War, I flew over 100 combat missions in 2 tours and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer, USN. I later joined the New Mexico National Guard and served as a Sergeant First Class in both Gunnery Sergeant and Platoon Sergeant positions, retiring with over 26 years of service. I have the military equivalent of an Associates of Electrical Engineering Technology, and attended George Washington University in Washington D.C. (Electrical Engineering Bachelor Degree Program) leaving in my last semester to work on the Space Shuttle Project as a Field Engineer. While at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, MD I flew as a test flight crewman, and did the environmental test and evaluation of the Space Shuttle telemetry systems. I lived and worked for 10 years in Silicon Valley (San Jose, California) as an electronic manufacturing executive (Manufacturing Manager (Chromatix, Inc), Director of Materials and Operations (OSI, Inc), New Product Development Manager (OSI), Vice President of Operations, and Vice President ¿ General Manager(Velodyne Acoustics, Inc) VP/GM (Triad Design,LLC)), responsible for the operations of high-tech electronic manufacturing facilities. I additionally worked as a computer systems/programming consultant for 3 years to the Automobile Salvage Pool/Transportation/Wrecking community designing systems and writing computer programs to track and record insurance consigned wrecked vehicles. I continued my formal education by attending University of California-Santa Cruz, and Emory Riddle University studying advanced management (Manufacturing Management, Aviation Management). I am also a certified American Production And Inventory Control (APICS) specialist. Realizing that my children needed a better environment to grow up in I returned home to New Mexico in 1990 and became a Deputy Sheriff, after working as a contract pilot (I have a Commercial Pilots License) for the Forest Service, during the fire season, in the Gila National Forest. multiple trailer and tanker endorsements. Prior to retiring from the Army I served on active duty as the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer on the Homeland Defense Security Detail at Dona Ana Range Camp south of White Sands Missile Range (Operation Noble Eagle) as well as activation for duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. My army specialties included Field Artillery Fire control and Transportation management. I worked in the logging industry as a consultant (Gila WoodNet, Inc) designing and building a small diameter timber processing facility converting diesel hydraulic systems to electric hydraulic systems in addition to maintenance of systems and transportation of timber. I worked for 2 and 3 year intervals as a Journeyman Electrician, and Senior/Lead Instrumentation/Electrical Technician in mining (Cobre and FMI mining), Transportation Manager (Environmental Development Group, Inc) I just retired as an Electrical Planner in the mining industry in Carlsbad New Mexico with Intrepid Potash. I am a graduate of the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Fe where I was the Class Leader of Class 126. I have been a law enforcement officer intermittently for 17 years where I served 3 sheriffs, first as a Resident Deputy in the Mimbres Valley, then as Undersheriff in both Grant and Hidalgo Counties, this was in addition to Lieutenant and Captain on the Santa Clara Police force. Having had Sheriff Department budget responsibility, I am proud to say that I have never been over budget as an administrator. I am a graduate of numerous advanced law enforcement training courses, including Certified Instructor, Certified Radar Instructor, Dare Instructor, and Counter-Drug Supervisor. I also provided Pilot services to Law Enforcement including the DEA for border drug interdiction, prisoner transport, and crime scene surveillance. I have also maintained currency in the electrical/electronic fields with advance or sustaining training in many new systems and disciplines. My commitment to public service has included, EMS (Certified First Responder), Fire Department (Chief and Assistant Chief), Search and Rescue (Search Aircraft Pilot). Additionally I was a Combat Life Saver in the Army with IV administration training, and I was also a certified rescue swimmer in the Navy. I am a divorced father with two children in Cobre High School and 7 older children. My school age children live in Bayard with their mother, the former Selah Gonzales Lee. I own property in the old Santa Rita area, and enjoy working on the many associated projects developed from a variety of interests. Old cars, sawmilling/woodworking, welding, and I own a small gold mill including crusher, trammel, screens, and orbital pan and a couple of claims that I am very proud of. I still run in marathons and 6 years at the Bataan Memorial 26.5 mile run keeps my foot in the door. Still not remarried or significant other, but there is always hope.
