James's Story
After high school I joined, and spent 5 yrs. in the Navy. After the Navy, I obtained my Merchant Mariner's Able Bodied Seaman document and worked on various merchant vessels. My 1st merchant ship was the USNS Kane, a oceanographic research ship out of Bayonne NJ. I spent 9 months on that ship, visiting ports in Falmouth & Plymouth England, Barry & Swansea Wales, Edinburgh Scotland, Rota & Cadiz Spain, Rotterdam Holland, Monte Carlo, and Naples Italy.
After the Kane, I came back to California and worked on oil tankers for Chevron & Arco. I met my wife on the Arco Fairbanks and just after we were married I obtained my 2nd Officer's license from the Coast Guard.

obs before landing a job with a hospital bed company as a electronics technician. I advanced quickly and became the regional service director for the Pacific northwest with offices in Seattle, Spokane, & Pasco WA, Anchorage AK, Helena MT, Victoria & Vancouver BC, & Calgary AB.
My wife couldn't stand the rain in Washington, & we relocated to San Luis Obispo CA where I got a job as a computer programmer for the Governor's Office of Emergency Services.
My wife is a tour guide at Hearst Castle, our kids are both grown. Our son graduated from Cal-Poly and our daughter is attending the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia CA.
I started learning to play a 5 string banjo when I was on the Alaska Standard and have more recently started learning to play guitar.
