James's Story

I always wanted to be a musician when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a stupid or lame idea. As it turns out, they were WRONGGG !!. What I did after leaving Warsaw after graduation in 1975 ====== I will skip to 1977 for now. Will backtrack and write about '75 &'76 later. I had quite a career with music == from a van crowded with 6 guys and all our gear, just traveling to a new city to make enough $$ to eat and get to the next 1, all the way to paid studio composer/arranger and sesion musician and music contractor. I recorded lots of music for television pilots as well as doing industrial soundtracks for things like safety films, company 'infomercials' used to attract investors/buyers/consumers. I tellya, it was quite a good life !! I've played gigs in almost every state in the continental US, and all through Canada. I've had my own bands, joined others, opened for other acts small and not so small. MY EARLY YEARS Texas 1977 & 78 I think the most special memories I have is when I used to travel to Austin TX from San Antonio, in 77/78; I met a bunch of great people and found a guy that I partied with and watched at the clubs to teach me to play lead guitar. up to then, I was mainly a rhythm player as well as acoustic and fingerstyle. This guy became one of my best friends pretty quickly - he was the BEST blues player I'd ever met... and he could play Jimi Hendrix songs PERFECTLY !!! We all hung out & partied and jammed for almost 3 yrs, and he would show me some l...Expand for more
icks and stuff. pretty soon I was getting to be pretty decent and he would have me come onstage with his band Paul Ray & the Cobras to do a few songs. That band broke up in 77 I think and my guitar teacher/bro started a new band, The Triple Threat Revue. He asked me to join, but I was still in the Air Force and couldn't do it. But we all still hung out like every weekend. ohh his name was Stevie. So me and Stevie and his singer LouAnn hung out and jammed with wesley (W.C.Clark), and Freddie Pharoah on drums. Well W.C quit the band in the summer of 78, and while he was looking round for a new band, Stevie and me would jamm all nite every Friday and Sat. even if he had a gig somewhere, we'd go back to his place, or LouAnn's or wherever and jamm and party till we uhhh passed out???. He formed Double Trouble with Chris Layton on drums, and Tommy Shannon on bass, after kicking LouAnn out of the band b/c she royally screwwed up a gig... she was TOOOOO buzzed !!! anyway, I left Texas soon after that to join the Marine Corp (long story that includes a brass pipe & a Air Force Colonel. I got out of the Corp and moved out to California, where I grew up (before Warsaw). By now, I was ready to cut loose with music... L.A was a totally different scene than Austin was. It was ALL ROCK... no blues. That was cool with me since I had totally gotten into zeppelin, the who, aerosmith, pink floyd etc etc.. all the greats of the 70s Rock world. Well Im gonna stop for now... watch for my California Era soon.
