James's Story

After high school I attended the University of Pittsburgh (pre-law studies) then transferred to the University of MD where I received a BM and BS in Music Education. I taught in Montgomery County School System for four years, including Director of Instrumental Music at BCC (orchestra, band, jazz ensemble, music theory) from 1975-1978. I then returned to graduate school at the Florida State University College of Music where I earned an MM and PhD in Music Theory. It was at FSU that I met my wife, Margaret Pendleton, while she was completing a DM in Piano Performance. We have been happily married for 37 years. After completing our degrees, Margaret and I taught at Edison College in Fort Myers, Florida for five years, she as piano faculty, me as music theory and history faculty as well as director of a community chorus. In 1986 I accepted a position as Professor of Music Theory at the FSU College of Music, where I remained for 30 years. During m...Expand for more
y tenure at FSU I served as chair of the Music Theory and Composition Department from 2000-2010, was Director of the Undergraduate Honors Program in a split appointment from 2010-2013, and then served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of Graduate Studies at the College of Music until I retired in the summer of 2016. My wife had a thriving piano studio for 20 years, then opened a music store, Beethoven & Company, which she sold in 2018. We have one son, Jonathan, who studied voice at FSU and is now a church musician and manages a Health Spa. His husband, Jacob, teaches advanced high school math and together they are active in community musical theater as performers and choreographers. Margaret and I are happily retired in Tallahassee, FL and enjoy volunteer work, travelling, reading, playing duo piano on our two Steinway grands, working in our gardens, binge watching Netflix, and the many friends we have made in our years here.
