James's Story
Attended Oregon State University Fall 1963-Summer 1967 (2s deferment expired upon completion of 4 years of college)
Drafted 9-1-1967:
Basic training at Fort Lewis
Advanced infantry training at Fort Polk (11 Bravo)
Entered Vietnam Feb 1968 assigned to 2/5th 1st Air Cal.
Ended up in I Corp, Quang Tri Provence.
Morning of 5-20-1968 on morning patrol, shot by a sniper.
Evac to Da Nang Military Hospital for initial surgery then flown to Japan for 30
day rehab before returning to Vietnam
Returned to my unit only to have the wound reopen
Evac to Da Nang Military Hospital for second surgery then flown to Japan for

d of returning to Vietnam to finish my 12 month
tour to qualify for early out, I was transferred to the 8th Army Headquarters
compound in Seoul Korea (Korea then was considered a war zone like
Vietnam)
Left the service in Feb 1969
For the next 41 years:
Lived in Milwaukie, OR
Married in October 1970 Had our 50th anniversary this year
Worked as a Software Analyst for Bankmatic Systems then Software Alliance
We have 2 kids (now adults) with each giving us 2 grand kids
Our daughter lives in Oregon City
Our son lives in Highlands Ranch, CO
Retired in 2010, moved to Highlands Ranch, CO in 2014 where we currently reside.
