James's Story
After graduation fro SHHS, went to work at Carwood MFG. In November, along with Burlin Tench, joined the US Army; BCT at Camp Gordon, GA, and AIT and Leadership school at Ft. Jackson, SC. Then on to the Panama Canal Zone where I earned the designation of "JUNGLE EXPERT". Could have eaten a snake but didn't, but did learn how to live there.
Released from active duty Oct. '56, went to work for F&H Wholesale Co., and enrolled at Piedmont College with help of the GI bill. In early 1958, went to work at Scovill MFG in Clarkesville, where I met my future wife, Ann Masters. Ann and I married in April '61. Industries (Lees Carpet Div) in Glasgow, VA, and in 1971 was transferred to Corporate HQ in Greensboro, NC. thru 1974. During all this time, I continued with the Army as a reservist until retirement in August of 1986.
I became owner of a small equpment sales and rental business (High Reach Equjpment Co.) in 1978 for three years, and after selling assets of High Reach, joined Volvo White Truck Corporation (later Volvo Trucks North America), until 1988 when I joined Thomas Built Buses in High Point, NC until retirement in 1998.
Now in retirement, I work intermittently for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (on call). Finally hung it up in September 2016 and living life of a retired country gentleman.
Moved to Jackson County, GA in 2005.
