James's Story

Life After Graduation from HP I attended U of Md college Park for 2 1/2 yrs. Received a Cert. in Ornamental Horticulture/Nursery Mgnt. Joined Naval Reserve spring of '73. spent 2 yrs active duty as a Hospital corpsman stationed at USNA Annapolis. From '75-'76 attended Iowa western community college, Council Bluffs, IA. Joined the USCG in '76. Spent the next 18 yrs with them. Retired USCG '94. Moved back to my hometown "Decorah,Iowa" in '94 where I still reside. Married Judilyn Santillan from the Philippines in 1999. Have worked for Wal-Mart for the past 12 years. Have no kids, two Maine Coon Cats. Hobbies: foreign cars, internet surfing, foreign travel, many forms of music. Military Joined the Naval Reserve on 02/15/73. as I didn't want any part of being drafted by the Army. Proceeded onto Boot Camp Spent a cold nine weeks the first part of '73 at Great lakes.Spent an additional 2 1/2 months attending Hospital Corps "A" school at (GL). Was transferred to Naval Hospital Annapolis, MD. Was attached there for 2 yrs. Worked on the Midshipmans ward also for operating services division. Was released from active status and was transferred too Navy & M arine Reserve Center, Omaha,NE. Spent 1 yr. playing weekend warrior. Wanted too return to active duty in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, but the recruiter said no! Didn't need Corpsman anymore. Said I had one choice sea duty aboard the USS Ranger as a non-rate. Well I told the Navy to shove it! Saw the Coast Guard recruiter who still said i had to be a non-rate but said I could go too any floating unit I wished. I took them at their word. After spending a week processing paperwork and getting uniforms in St. Louis,MO I was transferred to theUSCGC Gasconade (WLR 75401) located in Omaha. I was the oldest deck ape at the time. Spent just shy of a year on board before being transferred off too attended Storekeeper Class "A" School, in Petaluma, CA. That time aboard the Gasconade convinced me that I wanted no part of being a Boswain Mate nor a Machinist Mate. From Petaluma I was transferred to CG Air Station, Sitka,AK. I became part of the units Supply Dept. I spent not quite 2 yrs. there as a now Ex-wife ran out on me. A Hardship transfer sent me too CG Hdqtrs,Wash,DC the summer of '79. At HQ I worked in accounts payable at Trans Point for awhile. Later I was transferred to medical Administration near L'Fant Plaza. In the Spring of '82 I took a transfer to the Milpayce...Expand for more
n in Riverdale, MD. This took me shortly later onto Topeka, KS. I spent the next 3 yrs. there. Transfer came up again the Summer of '85. I was looking at a ship or independent duty so I opted for Independent. I was sent too Loran Station Marcus Island, Japan. Life there was interesting. I was quite busy alot of the time as I ordered everything but food plus I handled Payroll problems. '86 I again was moving on my next duty station was CG Air Station, Clearwater, FL. There I became apart of the Supply dept. Now I was one of many Storekeepers there. Thinking that I'd be there for at least 4 yrs. Since I was finally a first Class I bought a home. Really wasn't such a good Idea though as I was transferred out the spring of '89. Stuck with the house I moved on anyway. My new assignment took me to US Naval Supply Center, Naples, Italy. There I achieved a new title " CG Liasion Representative" or Lorep for short. My CG counterpart was a TT1. I had the most responsibility I had ever had thus far in my career. The best part of the job was that my Boss a CW04 (F&S) was located in London,UK. Fortunately I didn't see him too often. I enjoyed the business travel though. As I was able to travel to a couple of units that I handled. Probably the most interwesting one was Lorsta Lampedusa, Italy, located on a tiny Italian Island south of Sicily. Others I visited were Lorsta Sellia Marina, Italy (Southern Italy)and Lorsta Estartit, Spain. Plus Acteur London a few times. As '92 rolled around the TT1 and I were ordered too close the Liaison Office. I returned back to CG Airsta Clearwater, FL On returning I found out it's not always good too go back to a previous station as supply personnel had not changed for the better. Fortunately I had just 2 yrs. to do for my 20yr. retirement. June '94 I retired. Favorite ways too relax: channel surfing, fitness training, motorcycle riding. Pets, primarly cats If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to family, then spend the rest on retirement, vacation home and Travel. Lived in two dorms at U of M college Park My current age is 59. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be like my parents. I was so completely correct. More laid back, don't get too excited about new clothing trends In 10 years, I hope to be alive. I'm going to get there by physical training. My first job was at car hop, where I got paid $.75 to serve food. What I remember most about it is I hated it..
