James's Story
Life (updated 11/8/2021)
I got a degree from Ball State in 1970, then taught U.S. history at Munster High School for 4-1/2 years. I made my first career change when I got a job as a computer programmer trainee at Republic Steel in Chicago. I worked there for nearly five years. I moved to Pueblo, Colorado in late 1979 and worked as a computer programmer for CF&I Steel in that city. I moved to the Reno, Nevada area in 1983 and have been in northern Nevada ever since. After working at the local utility company in information technology for 12-1/2 years I took a severance offering and went to work for the State of Nevada as a labor market economist (second career change). I retired in 2008 at age 60 (thank you Mom and Dad). I've lived in Carson City (30 miles from Reno) since 1996.
I married my next door neighbor (Lynn Bagley, Morton class of 1967) and we stayed together for more than 27 years before getting a divorce. I later married my former...Expand for more
boss at the state, and that fiasco lasted for 2+ years (she thought I was still an employee!). A couple of years later I remarried Lynn. We were married for nearly 18 years on the second go-round (45 years in total) before Lynn passed away from cancer in 2021. I'm pretty sure I'm done with marriage. I have three children in their late 40's/early 50's, five grandchildren ranging from teenager to early 30's., and four great-grandchildren.
I play a fair amount of golf when the weather permits (which in northern Nevada is most of the time between the end of one basketball season and the start of the next--March to November). During the winter I am an avid fan of the University of Nevada basketball team. Those two activities, along with reading and too much TV watching, take up much of my free time.
I have been back to The Region only about a dozen times since I left there 40+ years ago. At least I finally made it to a couple of Morton reunions.
