James (Jim)'s Story

Life Left school at the beginning of my senior year to join the Army. Served for 11 years as a Special Forces/Special Ops Recondo (LRRP) and combat intelligence specialist. I left the Army and became a professional underwater Master Diver working on underwater cutting and welding jobs. By age 33, I had been around the world twice. But at age 34, I decided to start college. I graduated in 4 years with 2 degrees, Magna Cum Laud in both. Two days after graduation, I was hired as a full time professor at the University of Colorado War wounds from Vietnam came back to haunt me, taking most of my eyesight. I retired from the University and am now a professional artist and writer. I also study martial arts. Currently a Shodan (black belt) in both Shaolin Kempo and Taekwondo. I am the only legally blind man to ever win the men's fighting championship at the Rocky Mountain Martial Arts Tournament of Champions. Married and divorced 5 times, but always awarded custody of my kids. Can't seem to keep a wife, but always kept my kids. I have four girls and one boy. They were a handful to raise but they are all good kids and doing well. As a professional artist, my work is collected internationally in both private and public collections. I have two books published by the Schiffer Publishing Company about art: "Scrimshaw Techniques" and "Advanced Scrimshaw Techniques." I am currently under contract for a third book. My artwork can be seen online at The Scrimshaw Studio. I believe a man sho...Expand for more
uld be able to build a house, run a computer, birth a baby, sail a ship, go to war, love unconditionally, and never quit looking for something new to do. Specialization is for insects and idleness is for the dead. My tombstone will probably read "He's gone again." School I was quiet and nearly invisible in high school. The exception was when I skipped classes. The vice principle would always find me in the library. I bought my first motorcycle when I was in the 11th grade and left school in my senior year to join the Army. My favorite teacher was Dawn Struxness (English). I also attended a college writing class she taught during the summers. College I was a late bloomer as far as attending college. I started at age 34. I attended Metropolitan State College of Denver and the University of Denver. I have two degrees - BA English and BA Publishing. I graduated in four years, Magna Cum Laude in both degrees. I graduated on a Friday afternoon and was hired the following Monday morning to teach for the University of Colorado as a full time professor. Military I left school and joined the Army at age 17. I was trained as a scout and upon my arrival in Vietnam, I was further trained at the guerilla warfare Recondo School. I became a guerilla warfare and combat intelligence specialist. I was wounded a few times, the worst being a bullet from an enemy AK-47 rifle that hit me in the head. I became a Platoon Sergeant E-7 at age 25, but after 11 years, I left the Army for other adventures.
