James's Story
After high school, I went on to college, and then eventually law school - you know, doing what was expected. After law school, I entered private practice in New Holland, Lancaster County, PA, joining my brother Bob (many who went to Manheim Twp. high school will remember him I am sure) and two other attorneys. I continued as a partner in that firm for 29 years, until the stress level, and my level of antipathy, simply did not make it worth the trouble anymore. I retired from the law practice in June, 2007, just in time to save my sanity.
My wife is a concert harpist, and w2as formerly a music teacher in the Conestoga Valley School District. Her heart's desire has been to concentrate on her music as a performer. That is a tenuous existence at best, so she sought the security of a public school teaching job.
I had been going to Vermont at least once a year for over 20 years, for cycling and skiing. We are both avid cyclists. After I retired, an opportunity arose for me to take a job at a high-end bicycle shop in the Mad River Valley in Vermont, a skiing and cycling mecca, specializing in, but not strictly limited to, custom-built ...Expand for more
bicycles, thus allowing me to engage more deeply that particular passion of ours. So, in 2008 we decided to relocate from Lancaster County to Burlington, Vermont.
Basically, we both decided that we had had enough of the stress of our careers, and have decided to jump off the treadmill, scale back, simplify, and enjoy the remainder of our lives, rather than being slaves to careers that, at least for me, I had come to despise.
Burlington Vermont, on the shore of Lake Champlain, is a very cool city, urbane, but with a heavy touch of left-over hippiness. The University of Vermont is here (almost across the street from our condo), as well as 2 other colleges, so it is a very vibrant city. The saying is that the best thing about Burlington is that it is so close to Vermont. We both love cross-country skiing, the cycling in the summer is wonderful, as is the hiking in Vermont mountains. We also lift weights to keep up our strength and to help avoid injuries We love to travel, particularly self-guided bike trips.
Remember the first line of a song by James Taylor, our new mantra - "The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time."
