James's Story

Life Life? I wouldn't even know where to start. I've got two kids, James Jr. and Sydney. They're twins and seven years old. I have custody of them and have been a single dad since March of 2005. Their mom lives in Atlanta. But as challenging as that is, life has never been better. They're great kids. College I started my quest for a degree at Middlesex County College after I got out of the Navy. I went there from 91 to 92. Then I moved down to Jacksonville, NC for a year and attended Coastal Carolina Community College for a year. After taking a short break, I went to Norfolk State University from 95 - 97. I graduated in May of 97 with a BS in Accounting. After a really long break, I started attending Old Dominion University this past fall. I'm working on my MBA. After I finish that up in 2009, I plan to immediately start on my doctorate. Because I have children, where I go to school and what I major in will depend on geography. But I plan to either pursue a doctorate in Economics, Business Administration, or Finance. The choice will depend on the logistics of going to school, working, and raising my kids. the day after I turned 16. Come a long way from there, I guess. Still one paycheck away from the poor house. I guess everyone is. I got out of the active duty Navy in 1991. I went to college at flipped more burgers while doing so. After I graduated from NSU in 1991, I got a job working for Arthur Andersen in NYC. Left there in 1991 and came back down south. I went to work for a local CPA firm doing taxes and audits. I got my CPA license in 2002. I left that job in 2002, also. Now I work for the Capital Group. It's a mutual fund company. I do the accounting for the funds. It's an okay job. Sometimes it's interesting, sometimes not. I'm stuck in a cubicle, staring at a computer. That gets a little boring sometimes. In 2009 I should have my MBA. Maybe it will be time to move on to something else. I'm thinking something a little more to the north of the Mason-Dixon. Military I joined the Navy in June of 1988. I served onboard the USS John F. Kennedy from 88 - 91. I did two Med cruises, including Desert Storm. After I got out of active duty, I served in the active reserves until 1997. Since 1997, I have been in the Individual Ready Reserves. I'm on a list. They know where to find me when they need me!
