Life
When we lived in Northeast Kansas City I was generally confused about most things and occasionally troubled by my "odd" personality. Little did I know that my personality quirks would lead into the world of international military journalism, and I couldn't possibly have known as a teen that I'd:
-- marry one of the most tolerant and adventurous women on the planet -- 43 years and counting,
-- that we spend the majority of my working life overseas,
-- that I'd have the kind of career and financial rewards most people would kill to have,
-- or that nearly every day of my life would be a time of joy, learning and excitement.
Sure, my work has often been difficult -- and professionally dangerous -- but to have...Expand for more
had a life like mine must surely the distillation of the American Dream.
Update: Since retiring in 2004 I've had some of the greatest adventures in my time yet:
-- a long motorcycle tour around the US Southeast
-- a year in Kabul, Afghanistan, as Mentor the Spokesman of the Afghan Ministry of Defense
-- Deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, as Mentor to the Spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Interior .
-- Have been fully retired long enough to know that I don't like it. Am considering several offers to go back to Kabul to run a major communications program for NATO.
Deer hunting this year has been awful...I've hardly even gotten off a shot! Lots of deer but they're not coming out during hunting hours...
