James's Story
Life
After graduation, completed 1/2 a semester at LSU and then went into the Coast Guard Reserve to avoid Vietnam. After six months of duty, I came back to the family book store and ran those two careers concurrently for about 18 years.
After making Chief (E-7) at age 26, I went back to college at SLU (finished in 2.5 years and was Outstanding Graduating Senior in Law Enforcement), got a degree, got a Coast Guard commission, and returned to active duty in 1989. Was promoted to Captain (O-6) while serving in Washington at the Pentagon. Earned a Master's and Ph.D. in Public Administration and Certified as a Human Resource specialist (PHR). On the "makes no difference" side, I am a member of Mensa, the Triple Nine Society, INTERTEL and the ISPE. I dig tests... once I got out of school.
If you read an earlier profile, the dive boat on Guam got destroyed by super typhoon Ponsonga and the rental cabins in Bay Saint Louis were destroyed by Katrina. I lost my car, boat and house in Slidell from Katrina and bought up in Bogalusa in flood zone X. Still have 270' on Old River, but no flood zone. Sold two of the jet skis (had 4) to buy a couple of 4-wheelers now that I have some acreage to play on. Perhaps they will not need as much maintenance as the w...Expand for more
averunners.
Was in Washington for three years but finally got reassigned to New Orleans. I got to move into the house in Bogalusa. The Pentagon was interesting but way too political. Once again, I am Director of Auxiliary for the 8th Coast Guard District. In July of 2008, I passed the 40 year mark of federal service, 17 Reserve and 26 active duty.
Wow, I forgot to talk about travels. I covered the Pacific Rim, half the time in uniform and half the time in scuba gear. I went to the Philippines, Taiwan, Republic of China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Saipan, Tinian, Rota, Palau (6 times), Chuuk (Truk), Pohnpei, American Samoa, Yap, and I am sure other places. I got furniture and decor items from all of them and my furniture is all rosewood and the decorations all Asian. The place is like a museum with all the items.
Okay, not everyone likes a museum, so I rebuilt my game room and have a pool table (with ping pong top), two pinball machines, one of those double rim basket ball machines, PlayStation II, Wii, and other games. When groups come over I generally have to send them home so I can sleep...lol. I am not at the house too often, but it is home.
I am sure that is way too much information, so stop reading and go fill out your profile!
