James's Story
Life
I attended Inwood Elementary School and junior high school in Winter Haven. However, I spent the ninth grade in Leesburg High School (staying with my grandparents), but moved back to Winter Haven after that year and graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1956.
I enrolled at Florida State after graduation from WHHS, received a BS in social studies education (Lucy DuCharme's influence) in 1960 and a MS in social science in 1961. I was working on a doctorate when I was called to active duty in the Army. I served in Germany from 62-64 (Kriegsfeld Depot, Kaiserslautern Post), separated from service in Heidelberg, began teaching sociology in the University of Maryland European program at night and went to school at the University of Heidelberg during the day. I moved to Munich in November 1964, continued to teach for Maryland, and became a graduate assistant in the sociology department at the University of Munich. This was during the days when language competency was a requirement for the PhD, and I thought that this was an interesting way to meet that requirement. tration in the sociology of higher education in 1969. After graduation, I accepted an assistant professorship in education and sociology at Penn State, and stayed there until moving to UNC in 1973.
I am currently living in Durham, NC with my spouse, Sherry. We married in 1973, the product of an old story: She was a student in one of my Penn State classes. We moved to NC in 1973 where I was a professor of educational leadership at UNC Chapel Hill until December, 2001 when I became professor emeritus. From 1992-2001 I served as founding editor of On the Horizon; from 1997-2003 I served as founding editor of The Technology Source; from 2003 until 2009 I served as founding editor of Innovate, The Journal of Online Education.
I served in the US Army Reserve from 1960-1992, being commissioned in air defense artillery, transferring to the military police and then to civil affairs. For the last 15 years my assignment (branch immaterial) was to the US Army Research Institution for the Social and Behavioral Sciences, serving as Deputy Commander for the last four years.
I am now fully retired.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best.
Jim
