James's Story

Proud 1/8 Cherokee, 4/8 Southern Redneck, 7/8 Scott-Irish and 8/8 War Veteran. I am proud to have joined the military to serve after 9/11(2 deployments to Iraq);am transitioning back to civilian life. My time as AD critical care doc, Special Ops doc & Instructor was special; I am proud. I am a BS Family Physician..US Wounded Warrior. I built a practice from scratch in Florida before going into the USAF to serve after 9/11. I served 2 deployments to Iraq and am proud to be the first US Family Physician in the history of the USAF (possibly US Military) to fully manage a combat, trauma ICU (AFTH in Balad, Iraq). I led a team in the largest 'Mass Casualty' of the Iraq war and became certified in combat/critical care medicine by certificate from the combat surgeons serving with me during my 2005 Deployment to Iraq. My ICU managed about 20 patients at any given time; most on ventalators, ICP monitors, open chest/abdominal wounds or severe burns. I managed both Iraqis, American forces and civilian casualties (including children). I served about 4 years at Lackland AFB in Texas where I was in charge of "Readiness" of the Family Physicians in the San Antonio/Wilford Hall area. I was then recruited as an instructor at Nellis AFB, NV where I served about 2 years including one deployment to Iraq with US Army Special Operations. During that deployment, I served as the physician for the camp, special operations and many classified duties. I am most proud of my devotion to God and my family. My father is a retired SMSgt and served 4 years in the USMC before 17 years in the USAF. My family is rich in US Military tradition with many serving in the USMC, Army Paratroopers, and even my Great, Great Grandfather who was a Captain in the Confederate Army and buried in my hometown of Sheridan Arkansas. I am 2/8th Cherikee Indian (Tulsa), and mostly otherwise from Scott-Irish descent. My distant cousin on my fathers' side actually helped draft one of the amendments to the US Constitution (as I am told). I grew up in Sheridan Arkansas before being appointed to the US Air Force Academy in 1988. I spent 1 year there before transfering back to the University of Central Arkansas for a more defined 'pre-medical' program. After getting a BS in Biology, I attended Oklahoma State University-COM in Tulsa Oklahoma where I earned my medical degree.(D.O.). I then did my internship year at Suncoast Hospital in Tampa Florida and my residency at the 900 bed 'Florida...Expand for more
Hospital' in Orlando, Florida. I then joined a multi-specialty group near Palm Beach where I built my Urgent Care/outpatient/inpatient practice to a vibrant practice. I then worked as a pseudo-hospitalist for about a year before volunteering as a contractor at Fort Knox Kentucky right after 9/11. I was recruited by the USAF after 9/11 and joined: Wilford Hall Medical Center (see above). My 2 deployments to Iraq has put me through a lot via AFTH and Special Ops. I tried to comfort the hundreds of US Soldiers that I have cared for and stabilized for life transport in the battlefield/AFTH. My time in the US military/ Iraq was tough, and I am proud. I am also very proud of my wife who God blessed me with after the Iraq War. She is my prayers answered. As a physician and leader in the Miami area, she strives daily to bring God's love to her patients and community. We are working on a strong family of our own after coming from 2 families from different worlds but rooted in the same "country" background and closeness. She is kin to 1/2 of Miami and I am kin to 1/2 of Arkansas..... God works in mysterious ways! :) I currently work part time in South Florida doing both inpatient and outpatient at a "top 100" hospital but try to spend as much time as possible helping the indigent communities, Veterans group and especially the "Wounded Warriors". I survived an Iraq related lung condition and the rigors of war to only grow stronger in the eyes of God. I tried to help as many Iraqies as possible along the way but while also teaching young doctors along the way my experience. My mother and father have stayed by my side for my whole life and never put themselves first; I am so very greatful in all ways to them. I have been through so much in my life but have tried to improve myself each year along with growing closer to Jesus along the way. God has blessed me in so many ways. I am now also recovering from a upper back injury and not able to play tennis, run, climb , play basketball and other rigorous sports like I did but have channeled my focus to my Conservative politics (Tea Party!), the Wounded Warrior causes, Veteran causes, and all things Razorbacks (had to throw that in!). Many in this world never seem to forgive others , learn from life, promote the teachings of Jesus or leave the world a better place.......I am trying to do ALL. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GOD BLESS AMERICA !
