James's Story
Retired 1975 USCG pilot with 20 plus yrs of service. Recent widower 12 April 2010. Now live in Jourdanton, 30 or so miles south San Antonio on 60 acres. #2 daughter Kathleen takes good, good care of me as well as the 60 acres. Health doing ok for a "senior citizen". Having spent nearly 27 yrs in the service, I did a great of travel around the world.
I don't miss the long hours working but I do miss my "shipmates" that I made over the years. Have often thought about my classmates from Tech and wondered how they were/are doing. For a number of years I flew from aircraft carriers, made two WESTPAC cruises visiting many ports of call. On returning to the states I married my lovely wife Pat. Assigned to shore duty at Pensacola, Whiting Naval Air Station for three years as a flight instructor While there our two first kids were born (Mary & Kathleen). nd Peggy were born. In 1965 I left the Navy, entered the Coast Guard and began flying sea planes. Wife and I decided we needed another boy in the family so we adopted son Mike (9 months old at the time) The war in Viet Nam was heating up and the USAF was looking for experienced rescue pilots to fly as exchange pilot in Nam and I volunteered. I underwent training in the rescue C130 and reported first to Clark Air Base P.I. then to Tuy Hoa VN I flew combat rescue missions (247) Upon completion of this tour, I was assigned to CGAS San Francisco and started flying helos. Number last kid born there, he has 18 years in the USMC. My last assignment was at the Coast Guard Institute OK City where I retired as a Lt Comdr. I was inducted into the Coast Guard Aviation Hall of Fame along with 10 other CG pilots for our combat missions in Viet Nam. I consider the past 60 yrs exciting, wonderful and very rewarding having the privilege of serving our wonderful country. God Bless to all
