James's Story
Life
Graduated from Junction City High School
in '65, then from Kansas State in '70.
Into the Army - Officer Basic at Ft
Gordon, then "We have a requirement for
an Electrical Engineer in Panama, and
you're it!" But, first, fun Ranger
School, then 1-1/2 years of "Run through
the Jungle" at Tropic Test Center. Then
to Viet Nam, another year of "Run
through the Jungle." Close out and shut
down at Long Binh/Plantation/Binh Hoa,
at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, and at Pleiku, all
with the 39th Signal Bn. Art Askew was a
good company commander, but the others
shall remain nameless. Back to the World
(how provincial of us Americans, don't
you think?) A final six months at Ft
Ord, and I was cast into the cold, cruel
civilian world to work for a living. Got
married, to a lady I met in Panama.
She tho't she was marrying a soldier,...Expand for more
not the itinerent engineer I am. For
fourty-three years we were sent at
company expense from Michigan to
Kentucky, Ohio, Bangladesh, and Bolivia;
Colorado; and western Europe. The last
for seven years (glorious years!! Best
job I've ever had, and almost the best
I've ever heard of!) After a long stint in
the U.S. capital area we were moved to S.C. Loss of a contract led to a job at Vance AFB, OK. Then, sigh, retirement, which brought us back to SC, where we now reside.
While life hasn't been perfect,
nor always smooth, it has been good,
and, overall, happy. We learned a lot,
primarily that people everywhere are
just trying to make life a little better
for themselves and their families; that
good times are to be shared, and bad
times, too; and that life is to be lived, not watched. May your living be happily shared.
