James's Story

Life Summer of 74 traveled to California beaches, then to Utah. Skiing plans didn’t pan out, so I went to CWSC, then UW. Crab fished The Bering Sea, Started up Holliday Masonry in 1980. Married my best friend in 1987, still best friends, still married. Made two wonderful kids, Amy and Guy, in 1988 and 1990 respectively. Switched sports to “Life-Sports”, skiing, walking, scuba. Both kids and my wife scuba dive now and we have had some recent great adventures underwater. Ski as much as possible. Travel when possible. Looking forward to each day. jh College Central Washington State College was great (Son now attending). Lived in The Music Dorm, had great friends, many good professors. Left after 2 years for the UW. I soon discovered that working full time and trying to go to UW was hard, and not nearly as user friendly as Central had been. Moved to Bellingham (daughter now attending) trying to recapture that feeling, needing 2 semesters to graduate. Ran out of interest, headed for San Diego, back to Washington and made a plan. Decided to open my own masonry company, so I had to learn the whole business. Took an entry level job, started early, finished late, teaching myself to lay brick. Started my own company 2 years later. (Trip to Bearing Sea to earn seed money King Crab Fishing in Between). Workplace If you don't want your child t...Expand for more
o work as a Veterinarian, then just have them clean animal cages at your clinic....My introduction to "THE WORKING WORLD" Cleaning up animal poop made mopping floors seem like a vactation. Making a whopping $2.25/hr. I soon began job hunting for something that didn't include animal poop. Viola! Tape Town Inc. I worked full time from my Jr. Year 1972 till I graduated in 74. I even took a cut in pay to $2/hr for the first year. Once I entered College, I worked every vacation and many weekends for the same company, Tape Town. After College, I decided to start my own business, took an entry level position on a masonry crew, learned from the bottom up and started Holliday Masonry in 1980. There were some lean times, going door to door in the U District patching chimney's and such, but 29 years later, I'm still standing. I don't have to work out of my Mustang convertible, as I did when I started either. I am very fortunate to work with great craftsmen, and good people. We create masonry structures that let the creative part of our lives grow. I get to encourage craftsmen to challenge themselves in new and interesting ways, becoming the best masons they possibly can. Work is fun, exciting and rewarding. I enjoy people and the relationships that build up over time in the construction industry. Work is fun. Work is hard. Work is good. jh
