Jan's Story
After HS, I worked for a year before marrying and moving to Phoenix, AZ. Daughter, Jennifer, born (HS English teacher in Phoenix). Divorced four years later and moved back to Vegas. Went to work at the PO and met my husband. Quit to start a family. Son Paul born (runs sound equipment for Music groups all over the world) Visited my Mother-in-Law in Wilmington, NC aka Hurricane Alley. Loved it here and did not want to raise a family in Vegas so six months later sold everything and moved to Castle Hayne, NC (1981). After 3 months of no job and down to our last $15, Corning Glass Works hired my husband. When both of the kids were in school, I became a Subway Manager, then Manager of the University Snack Bar. I was getting tired of fast food so my husband taught me how to use a computer. I worked temp jobs and then became Office Manager of Independence Mall. When they were bought out and most of us were replaced, I did temp jobs for awhile. Then became a crossing guard and then back to the PO delivering mail. After I totaled my van delivering mail by swerving to avoid a stopped flatbed truck and hitting a fire hydrant (walked away with one scratch on my forehead), quit that job also. After 21 years, Corning laid off my husband. He had been on several mission trips and I had been on one, we decided to be missionaries. So again we sold most of our belongings and went to Pemba, Mozambiq...Expand for more
ue with Iris Ministries. Our church bought us a Land Rover and built two apartments for us and two other guys. (One of these guys, Kent, married a Brazilian missionary and 5 years later is still in Pemba.) We had to drive from Maputo, Mozambique up the coast of Mozambique to Pemba, what should have been a 3 day trek turned into 9 days, with ferries being sunk, roads washed out, etc. It was really difficult in Pemba, very little infrastructure, most of the buildings downtown were destroyed due to the fighting. (see Photos) After 3 months, we moved to Nelspruit, South Africa for three months. It was very beautiful there. Rich¿s mother had breast cancer so we came back to the states to help her. They had a guesthouse above their house in Pittsburg, Missouri (the middle of nowhere), they we ended up living in for almost five years. I started doing Medial Transcription while we were here and my husband got his Doctorate of Theology degree. I needed a home of my own so we moved back to Wallace, NC, about 35 minutes from our son in Castle Hayne. My husband found our home (after sending me hundreds of pictures), we became homeowners again. Wallace is a small town, we live 3 blocks from the center of town on 1.5+ acres in a two story home built in 1946 with real plaster walls and 5 inch molding, 2 fireplaces and 3 bathrooms and the most beautiful yard. And that is the rest of the story.
