Jan Nylander:  

I was born in Detroit, but reared in Milwaukee from the age of two. My given name is John, but my older sister started calling me Jan, and the name has stuck. In 1949, when I was fourteen, my family moved to California where I attended two high schools: Newman High (now defunct) and Chaffey, from which I graduated in 1953. The first college grad in my family, I have attended Chaffey College, University of La Verne, California State University at Los Angeles, University of Oregon, and La Sierra University. Though not a real scholar, I have two advanced degrees. The M.Ed. and Ed.S. degrees in educational psychology.. I was eligible for two more masters degrees, but never applied for them. I am married to Sally Thornton (Chaffey '54), have two sons and three granddaughters. With respect to work experience, I have had more short term, temporary, low-paying jobs in the past that I care to recall, having worked my way through both high school and college. Otherwise, I have been a probation officer, teacher, and educational researcher. Levels taught include junior high through graduate school. I've done my time with the army.
