Jan's Story

After 10 years in the Bloomington school system (3 at Valley View, 2 at Humboldt Heights, 1 at Riverside, 3 at Portland Jr. High, and 1 at Kennedy) my family moved to Burnsville where I completed my last two years of high school. While at Burnsville, I played varsity tennis (Mr. Heunisch, coach (then a rookie teacher and already retired)) and captained the chess team (Mr. Sorteberg, coach (and math teacher.)) I commuted to the U of M for five years, having started as a EE major and a Naval ROTC walk-on. Then, when the Computer Science department was created, I switched majors and dropped ROTC (my draft lottery number was 342.) In September of 1974, after graduating from the Institute of Technology at the U of M, I married Liz Feuk, a 1973 BHS graduate, then in her second year as a journalism major at the U of M. We lived in Richfield for about 2 years while I worked for the Postal Service in the computer room at the Bulk Mail Center in Eagan. In 1976 we bought a little house in Apple Valley, then Liz bought a horse, and my life changed forever. In the fall of 1976 I went to work for Sperry Univac (my organization has, over the years, evolved into a part of Leidos) just down the road from the Bulk Mail Center. We bought about 5 acres in the rural community of Webster, MN (about halfway between Northfield and New Prague) and with the help of Waconia Homes, built a new house in 1979-1980, where we still live. We spent 1980 in Bremen, West Germany, 1987 in...Expand for more
Toronto, half of 1991 and half of 1992 in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, and then three years in Anchorage, AK, starting in December of '05. We took about 27,000 pictures while in Alaska. We have 2 kids: Jennifer, a 2007 graduate of the U of M Vet School (she's a horse vet) and Adam, who went to Mankato State and then a music production school, and who sings and plays lead guitar in a cover band. I play golf occasionally (and poorly) and before the trip to Alaska played senior men's baseball for Webster's team. I love to camp and hike, though in Alaska I found out I suffer a bit from vertigo. I also like biking, but only recreationally; 20-25 miles is decent outing for me. Liz and I have taken 4 long distance hikes in the UK, including the 192-mile Coast to Coast in 2012,. the 96 mile West Highland Way in 2017, the Rob Roy Way in 2022 (billed as 79 miles but our GPS measured 88) and just this summer (2023) the lower half of the Cotswald Way, billed as 55 miles but which measured just over 64. I spent 4 years working at the FAA's Air Traffic Control Center in Farmington, MN as a Lockheed Martin employee supporting the deployment of a new nation-wide Air Traffic Control system called ERAM, after which I returned to Eagan. Fast forward to September of 2022. After 46 years working for Sperry UNIVAC, Paramax, Sperry, Unisys, Loral, Lockheed Martin, and finally Leidos (all performing the same job, same office, same coworkers, same pretty much everything) I retired
