Jan's Story
College
After getting out of the Air Force, I went to American River College for 2 years then went to Sac State and got a BA in psychology. I dabbled at a Masters in marriage and family counseling but got tired of it with one semester to go. The BA was useful since it got me an educational incentive of 20% on top of my base pay with Sacramento County.
Military
I decided to enlist in the Air Force rather than get shot up in the Army. I really didn't want to go to college right out of high school...Expand for more
so it wasn't too bad. I would have gotten drafted if I didn't enlist. My lottery number was 56 and they were taking 60 on down at the time. I spent my tour at Shaw AFB in lovely Sumter South Carolina,,, what a culture shock. Many people there are still living in the Civil War mentality. After 2 1/2 years of active duty, I was an illustrator as my job, I got out and went into the Air Force Reserve for 3 more years. I was able to use the GI Bill to go through college, so that all worked out fine.
